Subject: Anner Hightower (Hood County, Texas)
Am interested in subject as possibly being my gg-grandmother, Anner
Clemmons.
She is listed in school records as having attended Mt. Ebo/1890-91.
Because of
strict segregation during that era, I am assuming she was African
American or, at
least, non-white. Anner is such an uncommon name (my grandmother was also
named Anner after her grandmother). I feel so close, yet, so far from
finding this
woman's family of origin. The age would fit with the Anner you have
listed here
and she was born in TX.
Who was L.W. Walters? This person is listed as parent to many of the
Hightower
students. I will search the rest of the Hood County records listed to
see if there
are any documents listed in this name and, if so, I'll purchase them. Do
you have
a slave census?. . . any other compiled data re:African Americans in
early Hood
County history?. . . possibly suggest other sources for free or slave
Blacks
during this period in Hood County? I've been told of a Missouri slave
owner
named Hightower; some of whose ex-slaves can be traced to Oklahoma.
I realize that the type of information that I am requesting has not been
offered.
And also, being involved in this kind of research, I know how time
consuming it
can be. But, any help you can give would be greatly appreciated.
Thank you.

I am looking for family members relating to Zachariah LEWIS of
Washington County, Arkansas (who married Emeline RAMEY) as well
as those relating to William Thomas TRIMBLE of Boone County,
Arkansas (who married Ida Adelia LANGWELL). Zachariah came to
Hood County at the end of the 19th century and many of his
descendants remain in the Granbury area today. William came to
Hood County between 1900-10 and served as County Treasurer there
for 20 years. I relate to these two men by the marriage of
their children, Gilbert Franklin LEWIS and Nora Madge TRIMBLE in
1908. Much of my genealogical information pertaining to these
ancestors and those before them is available online at
http://www.hypertree.com/, but I am always looking for other
descendants.

married Robert E. Lee (aka "Lee") West on July 12, 1886 in Hood

I am seeking info on parents of MARY J.L. HOUSTON, daughter of
JAMES L. HOUSTON and MARCELLA A. PENRY. I have little upline
info, but a bit of downline that may help, so here goes:
MARY: b. 1870? near Terrill, Kaufman Co. m. July 12, 1886 in
Hood Co. to ROBERT E. LEE (LEE) WEST, b. Nov 19, 1869 near
Granbury, Hood Co. 4 children: Robert Reed (Reed), Rhoda, Naoma
and Ruby. Died while kids were young (10, 7, 6 & 7 mos) in April
of 1898 near Stockton, Hood Co. Only upline information I have
is that JAMES L. HOUSTON was a "Johnson Co. horse fancier."
Any
info, even the tiniest tidbit would be greatly appreciated, as

My name is Lance Key and I live in Lipan, NW Hood County. I've heard my
dad and uncles talk about the "Battle of Lookout Point" also known as
the "Point of Timbers Fight" or the "Ravine Slaughter". They are all
dead now, and the only person I know who has been to the site is Gene
Foster Lee. I believe he is a doctor in Dallas. His grandfather Robert
T. "Bob" Foster was a member of the fighters from the Lipan area that
joined fighters from Thorp Springs and Squaw Creek in cornering the 8
Indians (believed to be Caddo tribe) on a branch of Robinson Creek
called Spring Branch Creek. The fight was at a limestone ledge at the
creek headwaters about two miles from the present day Starr Hollow
Country Club. Mr Ware (Weir?) was killed by an Indian squaw after he had
shot and killed the leader of the Indian band. He died two weeks later
and is buried at the Thorp Springs cemetery. Mr McKinzie was wounded
but survived. The Indians were scalped. Bob Foster kept one of the
scalps. It is either owned by Ms Jewel Compton of Lipan (Bob Foster was
her dad by his 2nd wife when he was 63) or her nephew Gene Foster Lee.
Gene also owns Bob Foster's pistol and ammo pouch that were used in the
battle. The bell used by Bob Foster to summon help in the fight I think
is still in Ms Comptons yard near Lipan.
Other than hearing my dad talk about this fight, you can find more info
about it in the following places:
1. Hood County News, (I wish I could tell you the date, I think 1988;
call Leland Debusk at the paper and ask him, he wrote the article). I
think two articles have been written, but I can only find one in my
records. Should be a copy at the library in Granbury.
2. "Glancing Backwards, A History of Lipan, Texas", by Iris Williamson
Hubbard, 1975. I'm sure a copy is in the Hood Co. Library.
3. "Hood County History" by T.T. Ewell. Also should be at the library.
Gene Foster Lee, Winfred Spencer of Lipan along with rancher Bill McKay
visited the battle site in 1988.
Hope I have provided you with some usefull info. If I can be of any
further help, let me know.

Since 1857, the Paluxy River Valley has been the focus of this family's
history. Three covered wagons carrying the William Bryant BAKER
(Columbia, Tenn), William BENjamin TINNIN (Cape Girardeau, MO), and
Crites families arrived in the Paluxy River valley in 1857. All 3 settled
in what is now the Rock Church community. The boundary between the
counties of Erath and Hood snaked along the Paluxy River in such a way
that some of the family history has ended up in either Erath County
records or in Hood County. The church at that time was at Vinegar Hill.
William BEN TINNIN was a widower. His mother Charity ALLBRIGHT TINNIN
(Mrs. Huey) & his son ISSAC Christopher came with him to settle in
Texas. His 1st wife's last name was YANT. She & another son died in a
cholera epidemic in Cape Girardeau, MO. He married his 2nd wife, HANNAH
GUNNELS after he arrived in the Paluxy Valley. One of her daughters, ROSE
ANN TINNIN was born on Dec 28, 1866. Hannah died on August 8, 1874. Ben
remarried once again, this time to Culpernia Mayberry who had six
children from a previous marriage. Ben became known as the "Marryin'
Grandpa." His brother CHRISTOPHER TINNIN also came to Texas. He and
his wife (either BECKY or KATHERINE) settled near Acton, Texas, on the
other side of the Brazos River.
William Bryant BAKER m. ELIZABETH Emma RUSSELL in Sept 25, 1853 in or
near Columbia, Tenn. They had six children: JAMES M. BAKER (d. 1855),
BELLE Pilina BAKER (m. Mr. ARMSTRONG), MARY Ann Francis BAKER (m. Mr.
STANLEY), LEVI Sheppard BAKER (d. July 3, 1876), RUTH Alma Rinda BAKER
(m. Mr. TURNER), and William BRYANT Stonewall (for Stonewall Jackson)
BAKER. William Baker pere died on October 28, 1862, of complications from
a wound he received in the Battle of Pea Ridge, Arkansas. He left his
wife to raise five children, all under the age of 7, on the Texas
frontier.
On Nov. 11, 1886, his daughter ROSE ANN married William BRYANT BAKER's
son William BRYANT Stonewall BAKER. They had four children who lived:
PERNIE Elizabeth BAKER (b. 1888), DONna Belle BAKER (b. 1891), OTIS
Egbert BAKER (b. 1893), and VERA Slover BAKER (b. 1904). PERNIE BAKER
married FINIS Breckinridge JEFFERY in Tolar, Hood County, Texas, on Dec.
24, 1911. In the early 1900s, Bryant & Rose Ann moved from their farm
in Tolar to a farm bought from a Mr. MEEKS that was bordered by the
PALUXY and RICHARDSON Creeks. Bryant died there in 1933 of Bright's
disease. Rose Ann lived until 1948 when she died of cancer in her
daughter Vera's house in Bluff Dale, Erath County, Texas. The BYNAM
family bought the farm at that time. The farm, however, is still known
locally as the Old Baker place and where Paluxy Road crosses Paluxy Creek
is called Baker's Crossing.
OTIS BAKER married EVA PAIR from Glen Rose, Somervell County, Texas, on
Dec. 17, 1917. VERA BAKER married James DEWEY RENFROW of Erath County on
Oct. 20, 1923.
FINIS JEFFERY came to Tolar c. 1907 from Mt. Olive, Ark, to work with his
brother-in-law ROLAND LANDERS (m.LAURA Emmett JEFFERY, Finis' older
sister) in the Tolar Drug Store. In 1920, he moved his family into Fort
Worth to take a job at the drug store in the Polytechnic area. He died of
Bright's Disease on Sept. 30, 1930 in their house in Ft. Worth. PERNIE
was trained to work on a farm and be a housewife. She tried opening a
beauty shop in FW but it was the Depression and business was bad. She
moved to Stephenville, Erath County, Texas, and rented a house to take in
college students as boarders. This venture failed as well so she was
forced to move to the farm out at Baker's Crossing. She had to send her
youngest son, BEN JEFFERY, to live with her sister, DON BAKER VOGT, who
was now living in Memphis, Tenn. Her 3rd son, FB JEFFERY, stayed with
ROLAND LANDER's daughter MERLE LANDERS HANCOCK in Dublin, Texas. Her
older two sons, CARROLL Bryant JEFFERY and Emmett KAY JEFFERY came to the
farm with PERNIE.The two boys eventually left to join the military at the
beginning of WWII.
