Cardboard boat racers will return to beach

After the wild success of last fall's Pirate Invasion, the Pirates for Hire are returning to Granbury the last weekend in August. Captain Jack Sparrow, Bosen Shred, Shanghai, Mister Roberts and Davy Jones will participate in the Pirates for Kids festival. Plans include family activities such as an inner tube race, one-man raft and cardboard boat races at City Beach. Treasure hunts and costume contests are also planned. Moore is top artist for month

Wendy Moore was chosen as Artist of the Month for July by the Lake Granbury Art Association for her painting "Fossil Rim Friendly." The artwork will be on display at Community Bank in Acton until Aug. 9.
The Wrights are ready for some 'down' time

Longtime community advocate Norma Wright and husband David are retiring to the coast. “It's a good time for me to say goodbye,” she said Tuesday. After securing a contract on their Granbury house over the weekend, the couple was traveling south this week to look at property in Corpus Christi. Norma said the couple had been thinking about the move for some time. “We've been wanting to move somewhere that's a little bit warmer in the winter,” she said. Norma said she is retiring from her public life and plans to spend more time with her husband.
Hunter education course set Aug. 21-22 in Granbury

A Texas hunter education course will be held Aug. 21 (9 a.m.) and Aug. 22 (1 p.m.) at the Granbury Resort Conference Center, 621 E. Pearl St. in Granbury, according to instructor Jeremy Ballew. Class size is limited to about 30 students. It's open to anyone born on or after Sept. 2, 1971. The minimum age is 9, and the cost is $15 per person. Arson suspect now facing three felony charges

Kelly Otis Petty, 54, of Blackfoot Court in Comanche Harbor south of Granbury -- the arson suspect in the fire that destroyed the home where he formerly lived with his girlfriend -- is now facing one first-degree felony charge and two third-degree felonies, according to fire marshal Brian Fine. He was arrested on July 22 after a 16-hour standoff with deputies and other law officers at Kelly's Auto Repair on Contrary Creek Road.
Hood County man accused of felony assault on wife

James Lynn Enochs, 40, of Granbury Court in Granbury Acres, has been arrested and accused of assaulting his common-law wife by putting a pillow over her mouth, according to Hood County Sheriff's Office lieutenant Johnny Rose. The charge, a third-degree felony, is assault family/house member impede breathing/circulation, jail records indicate.
Women have district workshop

The Woman's Wednesday Club and Granbury Woman's Club recently hosted the 2010 Pioneer/Trinity District Workshop at deCordova Bend Estates Country Club. Woman's Wednesday Club president, Jeanell Morris and Granbury Woman's Club president Nancy Keeler directed the activities of the host clubs. This event was attended by 99 members of the federation.
