Hale, and for several years they were engaged in cotton buying, and by their honest and fair dealings built up a large circle of close friends who deeply mourn with other friends and loved ones, the sudden and unexpected departure of the one time strong and healthy man.
On September 14, 1920, he was married to Miss Virgie Taylor of Palo Pinto County, and to this happy union one child was born, a son now almost two years of age. Mr. Hale was converted and joined the Baptist church about ten years ago. He was honest, kind and courteous to all with whom he met and was associated with, and during his entire life always claimed a large circle of close and admiring friends.
During the world war he served his country faithfully as a member of the 111th Ammunition train and spent 13 months in the struggle over seas.
After some two weeks suffering from appendicitis he underwent an operation at an Abilene Sanitarium, but his condition was such that he could not withstand and overcome same, and on September 16th his soul went out to meet his Lord and Saviour. The remains were shipped to Lipan, Hood county, where in the presence of a large concourse of sorrowing friends and loved ones, they were tenderly laid to rest.
This paper joins many friends here and elsewhere in extending deepest sympathy to the bereaved loved ones, and especially the faithful wife and baby boy.

Memorials: American Heart Association or a charity of choice, in lieu of flowers.
Larry E. Joyce, a former career Army officer and Vietnam veteran who later became an executive with two major health organizations, gained national recognition when he took on Clinton administration officials to seek changes in American policy involving the use of military personnel in peacekeeping operations. His campaign began shortly after Casey, an Army Ranger, was killed Oct. 3, 1993, in a firefight in Mogadishu, Somalia.
Mr. Joyce's views were presented in several top national publications and during interviews on every major network. He also wrote articles that appeared in various national and regional newspapers.
His efforts were climaxed by an appearance before the Senate Armed Services Committee and a personal meeting with President Clinton. When the committee's report was withheld from the public, Mr. Joyce again took his case to the public, resulting in its release in September 1995. The report criticized the Clinton administration officials and the military's use of special operations forces. More importantly, government leaders developed and implemented new policies on the use of American fighting forces in peacekeeping activities.
Mr. Joyce was born July 8, 1938, in Dallas. He graduated from Merkel High School in Merkel in 1956 and from Hardin-Simmons University in Abilene with a BBA in 1960. While in college, Mr. Joyce was president of the world-famous HSU Cowboy Band and was named an ROTC distinguished military graduate, leading to a commission after graduation as a second lieutenant in the Army.
A year later, Mr. Joyce's battle group was ordered to West Berlin as a show of American resolve when the Soviet Union erected the infamous Berlin Wall. In 1963 Mr. Joyce volunteered to be one of the first American combat advisers to the Republic of Vietnam. He returned to Vietnam in 1967 as a helicopter pilot.
In 1970, Mr. Joyce was selected for Army Command General Staff College. While still in the Army, he attended graduate school at Texas Tech University in Lubbock, where he earned a master's degree in mass communications. That led to promotion to lieutenant colonel and the post of general manager of the European-Middle East edition of Stars and Stripes, a newspaper for military personnel and their families. He completed his military career at the Pentagon, where he was chief spokesperson for the secretary of the Army and Army chief of staff.
While serving in the Army, Mr. Joyce received the Bronze Star with oak leaf cluster, Meritorious Service Medal with four oak leaf clusters, Air Medal for Valor with 12 oak leaf clusters, Army Commendation Medal, Combat Infantryman's Badge and the Republic of Vietnam's Cross of Gallantry.
In 1980, Mr. Joyce joined Dallas-based EDS in the insurance division. Two years later he became vice president for the American Heart Association's office of communications at the national center in Dallas. He guided that organization through the writing of a strategic plan and a major refinement of its image. He also took charge of the AHA's scientific publishing operations.
Mr. Joyce moved to the American Medical Association in Chicago in 1990 as senior vice president of communications and publishing. While there, he consolidated all of the AMA's mass communications functions and reorganized and streamlined the scientific publishing operation resulting in all-time high net profits.
He returned to the American Heart Association in 1995 as vice president for corporate relations and retired in 1998 due to ill health.
He was preceded in death by his youngest son, Sgt. James Casey Joyce.

Haywood Erwin "Bud" Quinn
03/31/2000Colonel Haywood Erwin "Bud" Quinn passed away March 31, 2000 in Granbury. The funeral service was held at First United Methodist Church. Burial was at Holly Hills Cemetery with full military honors.
Col. Quinn was born June 13, 1915 in Paris, Texas, to Niven Quinn and Pattie Haywood Quinn. Following the death of his father when Haywood was only eight years old, he and his two sisters were primarily raised by an aunt and uncle, Fred and Majel Mitchell.
In the 1930s, he attended the University of Arkansas and worked as a law clerk. He later graduated from the University of Dayton while stationed at Wright-Patterson Air Force Base in Ohio. As the depression deepened, he entered the U.S. Calvary in El Paso, though one year later he transferred to the U.S. Army.
Having learned to fly while working for a "barnstorming" pilot as an older teenager, and following a stint as a private pilot, he joined the Army Air Corps and was commissioned as a flying Sergeant. After the outbreak of World War II, he received a commission as an officer.
As a pilot in the Pacific Theater during World War II, he was shot down twice. During the first incident, he was shot across the abdomen and was the sole survivor of the crash. Even though badly burned during the second incident, he was able to save two crewmembers. For his bravery during World War II he was awarded the Silver Star, the Distinguished Flying Cross (second only to the Congressional Medal of Honor,) the Air Medal and on two occasions, the Purple Heart.
It was while recuperating from World War II injuries at Kelly Air Force Base in San Antonio that he met Lt. Jean Wolfram, an Army nurse. They were married July 7, 1944.
While stationed in Japan during the Occupation, the Quinns developed a relationship with a young oriental man who was serving as the interpreter for Haywood’s fighter group. The Quinns sponsored Ken Tang Chow for citizenship to the United States, where he completed college and went on to become a nuclear physicist.
The early 1950s found the Quinns, now in the United States Air Force, assigned to the Canal Zone Panama. During a routine mission, Haywood was forced to crash-land his plane in a jungle region, which was known to be inhabited by cannibals. He was able to elude them during the several days it took to hike out of the jungle to safety.
Following a long career which included tours in six states and Washington D.C., Haywood retired from the Air Force in 1975, the same year the Quinns moved to Granbury.
In May, 1995 the Texas Senate honored the Quinns. The special resolution was read on the floor of the senate and read, in part: "Whereas, an exemplary and distinguished couple, Colonel and Mrs. Quinn have served their country, their state and their community unselfishly, and it is appropriate that they be honored this year, which is the 50th anniversary of the victory over Japan and the 51st anniversary of their marriage."
An infant daughter, Nora, was born and died in 1953. His wife Jean preceded him in death in May 1997.
Haywood Quinn was a member of the Granbury Masonic Lodge 392 and Scottish Rite. He was a co-founder of Lake Granbury Area Shrine Club. He was a past president and teacher of the Chapel Class at the First United Methodist Church. He also served on the church’s finance committee. He was a member of the Granbury Chamber Ambassador Club. As a longtime member of the Granbury Optimist Club, he distributed U.S. flags at the beginning of the July 4th parades for eight consecutive years. Haywood was also mentioned in the Hood County News millennium issue.
In August 1999, Haywood married Fran Eagon of Granbury, who survives him. He is also survived by his daughter and son-in-law, Majel and Steve Sullivan of The Woodlands; his grandchildren, Michael and Nicolle Sullivan of Alexandria, Va., and Julia and David Lockhart of Dallas; as well as great-granddaughter, Rachel Sullivan of Alexandria, Va.; and his sister, Mrs. Patsy Tiftickjian of Tyler. He is also survived by several nieces and nephews.
The family requests in lieu of flowers, donations be made to The Jean Quinn Scholarship Account at First National Bank, P.O. Box 400, Granbury, Texas 76048, which awards an annual scholarship to a Granbury graduating senior interested in a career in nursing. In 2001 it will offer a scholarship in memory of Col. Quinn to a student at Granbury High School entering the Corps of Cadets at Texas A&M University.

He had been very feeble for two years, but the last month a sickness seized him which took his strength rapidly. When the end came he passed quietly into the last sleep.
S. D. Windsor was born at Pinelog, Cass County, GA, Oct. 20, 1845. When he was three years old the home burned, he being severely burned and he wore the marks through life. When he was six years old his father died. Before he was sixteen the "War Between the States" broke out. The turmoil of debates and heated discussions preceding this war had its influence on his youthful mind and developed in him a strong will and a fearless daring.
His --- older brothers joined the army and left him to care for the home place. In late summer a company was being made up at Black ----. He left his ax in the woods and ran away without a word to his mother. When he reached the place they were selecting their men, he stepped into the group and stood on a box for he was small, weighing ninety-six pounds. He was accepted and joined the 8th Georgia Battalion, Davis Company.
The company was sent to the coast and other points and to James----. Here he contracted malaria and was discharged on account of his health. He went home and in a few months recuperated sufficiently to re-enlist, this time in the 4th Georgia Cavalry, Co. C, Johnson was his Captain; Martins Division, Wheelers Corps; and he remained with Wheeler until the close of the war. He was in the battle of Snake Creek, New Hope Church, Peach Tree Creek, Atlanta and Decatur. He was in many scouting squads and was on the raid with Wheeler at Knoxville and Nashville. They crossed the river at Muscle Shoals.
After the battle of Atlanta they followed Sherman three days and nights, fighting as they went. They lived roasting ---- and green apples. After that he was a Scout until the surrender.
In 1870, he came to east Texas with his mother, brother and sister. Two years later they came to Hood county and made their home on S---fs Creek near Tolar. Much of his time was spent in McCulloch county on the Colorado River, where he had horses and cows on the range. He also farmed, freighted and helped the trail drivers. One time he went over the "Old Chism Trail" to Wichita, Kansas, with cattle.
On ------ 12, 1883, he married Miss –llie Cummings. He was baptized in the Church of Christ in the summer of 1885 by Bro. Bob Smith. Four or five years after marriage he and his family began a twelve years ramble over West Texas and Oklahoma in a covered wagon, driving their herd of horses and cattle.
