Don't forget the water. Keep that thought in mind as you navigate the Fourth of July festivities this weekend. “We know it's going to be hot,” said Shelby Murphy, personal fitness trainer and owner of Empower Personal Fitness Studio in Acton. “Here in North Central Texas we'll have the humidity, too. So, that makes it a double whammy.” The 35th Annual Old Fashioned 4th of July, sponsored by the Granbury Chamber of Commerce, includes a weekend jammed full of outdoor activities. “Pack water with you wherever you go,” Murphy advises.

The annual Hometown Parade gets underway at 10 a.m. with over 100 patriotic floats, vehicles and horses. An estimated 20,000 people line the parade route from Granbury High School, east on Pearl Street, around the Historic Square and west on Bridge Street.

Coach of title team dies
 (Posted Fri 09:10 pm)
Athletes who played for former Granbury coach Arnett Weeks didn't forget him. Weeks, 84, died June 24 after a short illness, friends said. His daughter, Patsy Kennamer, of Bangs, told the Abilene Reporter-News that many of her father's former students stayed in touch regularly. "There are many, many of Daddy's 'boys' from Grandview, Granbury and Cisco who called and visited him frequently," she said. Weeks was coach of the 1954 state champion Granbury High School boys mile relay team. Weeks was with those team members at a recent art show in Granbury. "With the coach passing and that being the last occasion the team was with him made the occasion even more special to me," said artist Diana Davis Baker, a Granbury grad, whose paintings included the champion relayers. Funeral services were held in Bangs.

Hood County Fourth of July pet safety
 (Posted Fri 04:27 pm)
Is there an animal that enjoys the Fourth of July? Probably not, and the Society for the Prevention of Cruelty to Animals-Texas has tips to keep pets happy and healthy. Keep the animals inside with windows closed. Run the air conditioner or turn on the radio to mask firecracker explosions. They need to be where it's cool anyway. Let them seek shelter under a bed, behind a toilet or in a closet. If a dog is taken to a fireworks show, have chew toys for it to concentrate on.
Granbury High faces hazy future
 (Posted Thu 09:54 pm)
Granbury High School faces challenges from the state to improve or ... lose its accreditation, superintendent Ron Mayfield says. Losing accreditation means the campus would have to close, he said. At the heart of the matter is the number of Granbury students -- specifically economic disadvantaged pupils -- not completing high school. Principal Marsha Grissom says she and her staff are working to solve the problem. While realizing the seriousness of the issue -- the possibility of losing accreditation -- not all is bad at GHS, she says, pointing to rising academic scores.
