Kolten Trevino and Alex Sutton are headed to the state powerlifting meet after earning berths on March 5 at the Region 6 championships at Central High School. Granbury High School was a fourth-place finisher out of 39 schools.

Trevino was Granbury’s top-finisher with his first place in the 242-weight class as he squatted 645 pounds, bench pressed 395, and deadlifted 535 for a 1,575-pound total.

Trevino’s squat was 10 pounds better than his previous performances and gave him a season-best total by five pounds.

Sutton, lifting in the super-heavy-weight class, took second place with an overall total of 1,685 pounds. Sutton recorded a 640-pound squat, hefted 440 in the bench press and deadlifted 605.

Granbury had seven lifters taking part in the regional meet, including Tyler Rodgers (4th), Preston Lutgen, Parker Lutgen (6th), Braydon Olthoff, Jahir Orocio (5th).

“For both Granbury powerlifting teams, this was a year with high expectations, and both groups met or exceeded those. Our Lady Pirates qualified 17 girls, and the 14 that competed did so very well,” coach Sonny Galindo said.” Our boys qualified 7, and those seven poured their hearts into it.”

With that many athletes qualifying for the regional meet, the future looks bright for GHS powerlifting.

“Both groups will graduate some key senior lifters and leaders. These young people have helped this program become widely respected statewide. Our young lifters returning have a tremendous work ethic and had a very successful season as well. Our future in this program is something to look forward to,” Galindo said.
