Subject: Hale Record (Judge Davis Papers)
Date: Sat, 16 Jan 1999 12:51:03 -0000
From: "Virginia Hale" <virginia@computron.net<
To: "Frank Saffarrans" Hood County Genealogical Society

Dear Frank,

Thank you so much for providing the Hale Records. I am so excited by Judge Henry Davis' records! He was able to provide exactly what I was hoping for - the location of my great-grandfather's birth, plus solve a few family mysteries. Now I can trace the Hale family back at least one more generation!

Just to look at the pages, they seem non-distinct and repetitive. However, they do reveal a lot of information.

Primarily what was provided were 1940 and 1957 affidavits made by family members and leading Lipan citizens regarding the family of M. R. Hale, who died in 1935, and his living heirs. Why the affidavits were made is not stated, but probably related to the settling of the estate.

New information revealed follows:

Madison Right Hale was born in Madison County, Tennessee (1851).

After Madison Right Hale & America Jane Iles Reynolds married in Granbury in 1876, there was no documentation on them until the 1890 Hood County Census. I had suspected they had moved away, but had no proof and certainly could not guess to where they might have moved. In 1878 Josie Hale was born in Lipan. In 1879 William Houston Hale (Huse) was born in Arkansas.

Right & America Hale returned to Lipan between 1880 and early 1884 with their children: Annie Belle, Josie, Huse, probably Pearl (born in 1881). Lela Hale was born in Lipan in February 1884. (This explains why the Hale family was not recorded on the 1880 Census).

Josie Hale married Edd Gafford. His father, W. R. Gafford, was born in Arkansas.

William Houston Hale (Huse) married Mrs. Mattie Francis Gafford Compton. Edd & Mattie Gafford were brother and sister.

Raymond Guy Hale lived in Carson County, Texas (near Amarillo). He was a WWI veteran and a Special Texas Ranger. (Guy later married his brother's sister-in-law and moved to Dallas.)

Pearl Hale's given name was Paulene. Pearl married Alonzo Payton Campbell.

Lela Hale's actual name was Mary Lee.

Harry Hale's actual name was Benjamin Harrison Hale.

Jarret Grover Hale married Minnie Alice (maiden name unknown). (I actually met Minnie Hale. She lived in Merkel, Texas in 1961.)

A step-daughter, Annie Belle Reynolds Millhollin, lived in Erath County. However, her husband, Robert Lee Millhollin, was a Justice of the Peace in the Lipan area for many years.

There was confusion among the Affiants regarding the last name of America Iles' first husband. They listed both Randle or Runnells, ut never Reynolds.

Madison Right Hale remarried after the death of his wife America Hale to Mrs. Emma Allen Morris in 1929. There is a note that Emma is a Perry. A Mr. Lee Perry made an Affidavit.

Mrs. Emma Allen Morris Hale died in 1935 just a few months before Madison Right Hale died in 1935.

Affiants were: Pearl Hale Campbell, Lela Hale Roach, Lee Perry, Henry & Bessie Ball, Mrs. J. R. Workengen (Mary Francis) of Fort Worth, W.J. Aiken, Mrs. W.J. Aiken, and Hite Rippetoe. (I do not know who Lee Perry or Mrs. Workengen are.)

I am delighted to have the new information!

Judge Davis' handwriting is actually not too difficult to read. I plan to be in the Granbury area the first two weeks in June. One of my priorities is toresearch the Judge Davis files for information on our Civil War veterans.

Thanks for making the new changes for the retrieval of the information.

Love, Ginger

From: Joann Rhome Herring
To: ancestor@granbury.com
I noticed the following while reading through the newspaper listings.
We are sorry to learn that Miss Daisy Cogdell has been quite seriously ill this past week.
I would love to know more about this article.
Daisy (later Daysie) Cogdell (Rhome) was my grandmother. I orginally came to this home page searching for Lucy Norfleet Duke Cogdell (Daysie's mother). I have been trying to locate her mother and father for months (seems like years) - so far I have found out that her parents were W. E. Duke born about 1815 in Tennessee, died after 1870, maybe in Red River County and who married Sarah (Perhaps Norfleet) born 1840 in Tennessee. They were married sometime around 1857 or 1858. I have February 1858 but - Lucy Norfleet Duke Cogdell, wife of Daniel Calhoun Cogdell was born in January of 1858 in Bowie, County. Would love to know when they were married. Lucy's sister Fanny, who apparently didn't live to adulthood was born around 1861.
I found a Woodson E. Duke, who came to Texas in May of 1836 on the 1850 Bowie County Census with a different wife and 2 month old child. I found W. E. Duke on the 1860 census married to Sarah with daughter Lucy. W. E. Duke is also on the 1870 census of Red River County. Trying to prove that W. E. Duke is Woodson E. Duke with brother Pleasant Duke. I noticed a W. A. Duke in Granbury, Hood County Texas March 8, 1894 newspaper, stating:
Mrs. E. M. Twist of Denver, Colorado, is visiting her parents, Mr. & Mrs. W. A. Duke.
This W. A. Duke probably has not connection to my W. E. Duke but just very curious. Grasping at straws I suppose.
By any strange far fetched stretch of anyone's imagination - do you know anything of this family. I know that my gr grandfather Daniel Cogdell was a prominent man - in fact, I have visited the bank there in the town square in Granbury with my father, Byron Cogdell Rhome, several years ago. I also saw the old home from the outside (now a B&B I believe). I have an obituary for Lucy Norfleet Duke Cogdell. It states that she came from an old aristocratic southern family who lost all of their money in the civil war. Not much help there. I believe that Lucy died as a result of a auto accident.
I would be happy to pay for any information you might have on my family. I understand that my grandmother and grandfather were married in Granbury May 6, 1901. Joseph Otto Rhome/Daysie Norfleet Cogdell. My father once told me that his father, Joseph, owned a jewelry store for a short period of time in Granbury.
I know shortly after their marriage they moved to Bosque County where he had a ranch. This ranch was lost due to hard times in the early 1930s.
I live in Alaska - a long ways from Hood County and it is so difficult for me to do a lot of research. I have an awful case of asthma which means I cannot stay in libraries for very long - allergic to dust and mole.
Again, I would be happy to pay anyone for their time and costs.
Thank you.

Subject: One arm grave
Date: Wed, 4 Nov 1998 20:57:28 EST
From: GalikP@aol.com
To: granbury@emcee.com
CC: mcconal@star-telegram.com
In Reply to the arm buried in the Granbury cemetery:
My Mother, maiden name, Amanda Elizabeth Holland told me this story: "My half brother, Henry Holland, fell out of a pecan tree and broke his arm when he was just thirteen years old. He was just a young child and they amputated his right arm at the wrist, blood poison had set in, gangrene was what they called it in the old days. Then, just below the elbow and the last time they had to cut off right there at the stump (she put her finger on her arm over half way up between the elbow and her shoulder). But he didn't want any help at rolling a Bulldurmn cigarette. He'd hold his paper in his left hand and tuck it up (the bulldurmn pouch under his right arm pit) and put that Bulldurmn in there and he'd pull that string (to close the pouch) with his teeth, he would strike his own match to light his cigarette. He'd lace and tie his own shoes and he buttoned all of his own clothes, underwear, shirts and pants and everything, and I think that's really wonderful. My father bought him a half moon shaped knife. On the back side of it, on the end of his knife, was a five prong fork. He always ate T- bone steaks & did not want anyone to help him. He was a pumper for Frisco, the Frisco Railroad Company and pumped water for trains, freight and passenger that ran through Granbury, Texas."
He also had a knife with a curved blade, like a half moon, that would fold up into a round case that looked like a quarter, he would use it to cut the ends off of his cigars.
Amanda tells how Henry died. "He died in a Fort Worth hospital. His wife's maiden name was Gola Rash, who fried some fish and took it to the hospital. He sat on the edge of the bed and ate the fish and fell over backward on the bed and died."
Baby grave on left: Infant of J. J. and Margaret Caroline Holland
Middle: Nov. 18, 1895 - Arm of W. H. Holland
Amputated: (the article has Nov. 10 could be, but the year 1975? No way!
Because William Henry Holland was born in 1882)
Right: Infant of J. J. and Margaret Caroline Holland
John J. and Margaret Holland had twins and another baby that died, year unknown. I do not know who the two baby graves are but I would guess, that the twins are buried there.
If you would check out the adult graves, I think that you would find that Henry's Father, John Jay Holland is resting in the middle grave between his first wife, Margaret Caroline Tow Holland and his second wife Annie Alabama Obel Holland. I think that this is unusual.
Mr. Monroe Davis might be surprised to learn that John Jay Holland, among other things, would dig graves, he made some head stones, and some of the residents of Granbury would hire him to clean graves for them.
John Jay Snead Holland was one of Granbury's early settlers.

My Great Grandfather was born in Hood County.
Daniel Christopher Herring b:3/31/1863
His parents were
Sherwood Herring b:3/13/1819 in NC
Elvira Lucretia Jane Tinnin b:1838 in Mo
Sherwood owned land with his brothers in Collin County (land grant) and had 2 children by his first wife in Collin County. She died in 1855 bearing their second child. He marries to Ms Tinnin in Collin County on 4/4/1858. Their first child was William don't know where or when he was born, but Daniel was next and he was born in Hood County.
They had moved on to Patrick (McLennan County) by 1865 because child #3 was born there. They had a total of 4 children in Patrick. They prospered there and Died there.
I'm trying to figure out why Daniel was born in Hood County. I understand there was a Indian massacre up in Collin - we're they scared off - even though they had a land grant?
Was Hood Cty the nearest hospital - to have a baby? Did they actually live there

My husband & I recently purchased the home at 511 S. Baker St., Granbury, & we're converting to a Bed & Breakfast. Trying to determine who owned the home when it was built, approx. 1900. Have traced back to Dec 12, 1899 when Martha Wright, single female purchased the land, but have not been able to determine whether she owned when it was built. D.O. Baker owned property adjacent on N.E. I believe. Would like to include as much history as possible in brochure for B&B, which needs to be in print within a couple wks. Any help you have would be appreciated. The property was also known (I believe) as Kennon-Atchley home, but since home was built in 1900, don't think they built. Thanks for your help. Rebecca later married a Jefferson Stamper, but unable to find any information on this. Family members have told that my gg-grandfather once lived in Hood and Fannin counties. My great-grandfather's name was John Henry Studer and is buried in Seymour, Tx. If there is any information about this Studer in court files, I would be excited to know. Thanks!

Looking for information on the parentage of Roy E. Cook Born September 9, 1898 Died September 1975. I don't know if my grandfather Roy was born in Hood County or not. Though it is possible he was born near Dublin. I do remember that he did work at the Hood County Court house in the mid to late 1960's. Any information you could share would be appreciated. One of my fondest memories of him was a visit to the big bell in the court house tower.

Subject: Re: Indian problem
Date: Fri, 26 Jun 1998 08:31:59 -0500
From: Leonard <lldamron@swbell.net
I started working with the Ferguson line, this around 20 years or so ago. There were a number of inter-related families however, so I just worked all of them. The principal names are, Brock, Cox, Duckett, and Higgins, although there are numerous other surnames. These people were either born in Ga., or were in Ga. from other states before removing west. Parker Co., Texas was the hot spot for them, although some are in other counties. By the way, in the queries relating to Hood Co., Texas I find someone is searching for a William Andrew Ferguson, and from what I could see I think this is Andrew William Ferguson, son of Edward Ferguson and Selina Duckett. I have this Andrew William Ferguson in census reports of Ga., Ky., Tenn., Ark., and Okla., although he was in Texas as a child was born there.
My grandmother was Mary Jane Ferguson, she was born in Habersham Co., Ga. in 1848. Grandmother told her grandchildren many stories about their trek westward. She said they left Ga. in the spring of 1861. A number of families were in the party headed by her father, William Jasper Ferguson. One of these families was the family of Alfred H. Duckett, who married Malinda Brock, she a sister to grandmothers mother, Nancy Jane Brock. Alfred H. Duckett died in 1860 and William J. Ferguson took her and her children under his wing. They arrived in Polk Co., Ark. by 17 Aug 1861, this as the bible of Alfred H. and Malinda Duckett records the death of Malinda on that date, and states she died in Ark.
Grandmother then said that they continued on into Texas, and that the went to Stephensville and Hamilton, Texas for supplies, and that they had grain ground at at grist mill in Puluxy. Texas. She also said they resided on the Brazos River. They arrived Texas by 1862, this as a child born to Alford H. Cox and Sarah Ferguson, grandmothers eldest sister, was born in Texas in 1862.
Grandmother then told about an Indian problem. It seems that two white boys murdered two old Indian trappers. The Indians wanted these boys but of course the settlers wouldn't give them up. Grandmothers father thinking there would be a significant Indian uprising decided to back off into Ark., whereupon, according to grandmother, a relative offered him 40 acres of bottom land if he would remain, but at this her father replied, "I would not trade the hair of any of my children for all the land in Texas", and he did return to Ark. The date of his return would have been no later than 1864, this as the second child of Alford H. and Sarah Cox was born Ark. in 1864.
I have used the stories of grandmother as avenues for additional research, and in so doing I have come upon documented data that proved the stories, and in none of these stories have I found anything that was contradictive, so I must assume this story about the Indian problem was factual.
Do you have any knowledge as to such an Indian uprising?

Subject: Ministers
Date: Sun, 14 Jun 1998 21:32:56 -1000
From: L & J CROWDEN <hanamlia@gte.net
My great-great grandfather was minister #80, Leander Painter. According to my mother, he rode a circuit to minister to people. Do you have any other information, such as where he went? There is also some confusion as to the Rock Church. Was he ever the minister there?
Leander Painter's first wife Hannah Gunnals, and infant child were buried in the middle of what is now a cow pasture. Stories state that that was to be the site of the new cemetary. Do you have any info on that?
Any assistance you can give me would be greatly appreciated.
Thank you,
Linda Crowden

I would like any information on the REYNOLDS family. I have been told they are well written up in Hood County History. Do you know of any books that contain early settlers of Hood County? I have been told that Samuel Fletcher REYNOLDS wrote a biography. He was the oldest child of Micajah "Cage" REYNOLDS. He had a brother, John Cornelius Reynolds, my Great Grandfather. They moved to Grayson County, Texas from Missouri in 1847 then to Denton County in about 1856-57, when it was known as Peter's Colony. I know that Patrick Cleburn REYNOLDS, son of John Cornelius, lived in Grandbury. I would appreciate if anyone could help me to find the Biography Samuel F. wrote, and any history books that might contain information about the family.

Yet we still know only the name of WILLIAM CASS DEAVER's wife which was MARY SIMS and that they were married in Bell Co. and that marriage date. Does anybody know any of the tales of this Mary Sims and the Deaver family whilst they lived in Granbury? My great-grandfather was George Harrison Box who moved to TX from MS with his parents, Wm B & Tebitha Box in the late 1860's. They settled in Hill Co around Covington and Itasca. George married Mattie Lou Moore from Johnson Co in August of 1878. In 1880 they were listed in the Hill Co census living near his parents. Mattie Lou had 2 children survive to adulthood: a dau, Mary Letha Box, b. May 2, 1881, and Elvin L Box, b. 19 July 1891. She died of childbirth complications the following Jan, 1892. Her place of burial is unknown. She is suppossed to have had other sons who died young: Rush Box, Shelby Box, & Frank Douglas Box. Dates of birth, death, and places of burial are unknown, although one account states 2 boys buried in Kimball, TX...another, Granbury. Since Mattie Lou's husband remarried shortly after her death & died much later, I believe Mattie is buried with her sons--possibly in Granbury (I've checked Grandview). Would like to learn of her burial place, more of the sons, and of her parents. Efforts to find her on the 1870 census before marriage have been fruitless. Any help out there?!

I am looking for detailed information on the family name of BALES I have found some vague listings of a Jesse BALES mentioned in County Attorney Docket records, between 1887 and 1900, as well as a Nat BALES mentioned on Grand Jury records between 1918 and 1933, a JW BALES in Legal Filings 1918 and 1920. I am trying to trace a family tree for my girlfriend, and the only distinct history I have is oral from her dad, who claims that at one time prior to the civil war the family were plantation owners, but had to move West post-war because of criminal activity. I have found several mentions of the Bales name in other geneology listings that seem to back up this theory, as they are listed in Virginia primarily. I would like to be able to build a bridge between the information I've gotten on the internet sources and what little she knows so I can find out whether or not I'm even tracing the right family line.

My 3xgreat grandmother was Mary Rebecca Walker nee Powell, died March 14, 1881 full of faith and 82 years of age. Nacogdoches Co. Texas.
She was the mother of Nancy Minerva Walker Swift who married William Henry Swift, my 2xgreat grandfather. WH Swift who was sheriff of Nacogdoches Co. and state senator during the 13th legislature, 1871.
WH Swift and Nancy Minerva Walker met near Marion, Texas at the confluence of the Neches and Angelina Rivers, 1840. They were married July 24, 1844. They built a log house at Melrose, TX and later moved to Hopewell. Their union bore 13 children. One of the 13 was my great grandfather James Cicero Swift.
Nancy M. Swift nee Walker was born in Habisham Co. Georgia, May 7, 1825 and died in Nacogdoches Co. Texas, March 19, 1881, Cross Roads Cemetery.
I don't know anything else about the Walkers in my tree, but somehow, if this connects let me know.

Seeking info on the following:
Thomas BRUCE b. 1810 in TN. Member of Tennessee Volunteers, fought in Second Seminole Indian War. It is believed his father came from Holland. Moved to TX before 1900. Married Jimma ____? in TN. All their children were born in TN, as follows:
John M.; James M.,(possibly twins); Mary E. (maybe C.); Sarah J.; Martha O.; Thomas Jr.; and Seburn Franklin, (my lineage.) Seburn Franklin was born 11-27-1855, and died 3-2-1923 in Gainsville, TX.
Seburn married Violet Elizabeth Thomas on 11-8-1909. (She was from Hood County, TX) Seburn and Elizabeth had the following children:
Thomas Benton 8-4-1880; John Miller 3-8-1887; Samuel Harrison 1-23-1886; and Bertie May 5-2-1894.
Now, I was told my Thomas BRUCE from TN married Jimma in TN. On the death certificate for his son, Seburn, the mother is listed as Sadie Newman from ILL. Thomas is listed as being born in ILL. also. So now I have (2) probable names for the wife of my Thomas BRUCE.
Looking at the fact that Seburn's first child was born in 1880 in TX, then it's very likely Thomas and either Jimma or Sadie are listed on an 1870 census from somewhere in TN.
I have found a Thomas BRUCE on the 1820 Rutherford Co. census, which has a 10 year old son, which would put him being born in 1810. So maybe this Thomas BRUCE is my Thomas BRUCE's father.

On the back of an old family picture Laura Alice JOHNSON ORR (born Mambrino, Hood Co., Texas, died 1906) is listed as the mother of Henry Thomason ORR, Dolly "Aunt Blue" CAVASOS (it is not known whether this is her middle name or her married name), and Carlinda? Catherine "Kate" ORR.
"Kate" ORR (1883-1969) married my grandfather James Peak? "Jim" STALCUP (1876-1928).
According to family history "Jim" STALCUP was a teacher at an Indian Reservation (now defunct) near Cleburn, Johnson Co., Texas.
Hood County records show an Henry T. ORR, (T. for Thomason?) who died in 1937, as father of Fannie ORR (b. 1883) who later married H. W. HUDGINS in 1899, and Kate ORR (b. 1888).
Hood Co. records also show a J. M. ORR and his wife Gracie CHEEK as parents of Zelma Anzanetta ORR (b. 1907) and another daughter ORR (b. 1905).
Hood Co. records show two Gracie CHEEKs, Gracie (b. 1883), dau. of S. J. CHEEK, and Gracie (b. 1889), dau. of J. T. CHEEK and C. I. Laxton (who married in 1887).
Does anyone have any information about CAVASOS, JOHNSONs, ORRs, STALCUPs and/or CHEEKs who lived in Hood Co., Texas or Johnson Co., Texas in the late 1800's, or any information which would help me sort out their descendants?
Thank you

Yes. I have a comment to make regarding one of the marriages which were scanned into the Hood County Web Page. Hull, E.C. married Hull, Mollie 5 May 1894 D/136 The scanner picked up the 5 and it appears "sMay" and Mollie was shown as Hall. I knew Mollie and have many pictures of her and E.C. and their family. Mollie and E.C. were first cousins, their parents were early settlers of Hood (then Johnson co.) having settled in 1855 between Walnut and Fall Creeks. An early History of Hood county mentions this large Hull family which also includes the families of Crouch and Fanning and the then "Ghost town of Hull Town." I have extensive research on these families, compiled since 1965, and wish to contact anyone interested.
Mary Jane "Mollie" Hull, daughter of James Marion Hull and Palmyra Fanning married Elijah C. Hull, Jr., son of Elijah C. Hull and Mary J. Ferguson.
Please make the above corrections to your marriages lists. If I can be of any help to you, please do not hesitate. You have a great Site. Just now discovered it and will be referring to it frequently from now on.

T. H. HALL was born in Parish of Concordia, LA in the 1840's. Then he lived in EASTLAND COUNTY, TX for many years. Then he moved to Hood County, TX. He is listed as a property owner in Hood County, TX from 1875 - 1883. June 21, 1876: T. H. Hall registered a total of 44 cattle hides and brands with Hood County. 1880 Census shows T. H. HALL as living in Hood County, TX. Occupation: farmer 1877 - 1882 T. H. HALL had 4 children attending school in Hood County. Then in the 1890's he shows up in Eastland County again, but then he registered as a medical doctor. My question is this: Is there a Medical Universtiy in HOOD County? Where could he have gone to medical school? How could he have had time to farm, raise a family, and go to medical school all at the same time? Are university records from that time period available? Where would I write to obtain copies of school records?

The following came into my possession while researching for the "History of Boz" for Ellis County Genealogical Society. Mrs. Dow (Dunaway) McGregor, now deceased, was kind enough to share her mother's scrapbook with me, and this clipping was in it. If you do not have it, I thought it might be of interest.
AGED GRANDSON OF DAVID CROCKETT VISITS GREAT GRANDDAUGHTER
(No date given on the clipping, but descendants believed it to be in the mid 1940"s)
Ashley W. Crockett, 89 years of age, of Grandbury, Texas, only living grandson of the historic David Crockett, visited Sunday with his grandson and granddaughter-in-law, Mr. and Mrs. Donald King Crockett, and his great- granddaughter, Donna Ruth Crockett, who was born June 12 at Waxahachie Sanitarium.
A group of relatives assembled for the occasion in the home of Mrs. Donald Crockett's parents, Mr. and Mrs. Waldo Dunaway, who live in the old home of the late Jeff R. Dunaway near Bethel. Among those present were two great- grandmothers of the newly-arrived baby - Mrs. Jeff R. Dunaway and Mrs. J. M. Ballard of Waxahachie, Mr. and Mrs. W. D. Crockett of Fort Worth; paternal grandparents of the baby, were present, also, Mrs. Dow McGregor of Waxahachie and Mrs. Sue Harris of Fort Worth, great-aunts of the baby, and two other great-aunts of Grandview, were among the guests.
The baby's mother, Mrs. Donald King Crockett is the former Miss Mary Dunaway. Recently, Mrs. Fred Sherwood of Childress, the former Miss Ruth Dunaway of Waxahachie, a great-aunt for whom the Crockett baby is named, together with Donna for her father's name, Donald, was a guest in the Dunaway home.

These two men may have been related to the family of Wilson Hopkins Barker. They ( Daved and Joseph ) arrived in Texas 1860-1870?
Also looking on any information you may have on Elizabeth Ann Fitzpatrick Sprague who had friends in Hood County. Elizabeth had been captured in the Elm Creek raid of 1864 in Young County. In 1859 George ALLEN applied for and received a 3rd class preemptive headright of 160 acres on Kickapoo Creek (where Lipan is presently situated.) The 1860 census shows George ALLEN, age 80, b.N.C.;Sam ALLEN, age 60, b.N.C.; Samuel A. ALLEN (my g.g.grandfather) age 22, b. TN; and Letty ALLEN, age 19, b.TN.. This was the entire houshold.
Also according to the 1860 census, living in Stephenville Township was the LA FORCE family, consisting of Luke, age 44, Amy, age 39, Elizabeth, age 13, Caroline, 16, and Winfiels Scott, 11.
In Nov. 1860 George ALLEN sold his headright to Samuel A. ALLEN, who at a date unknown, married Elizabeth LA FORCE. Their first child, Luana, was born in 1864. In 1868, Samuel A.ALLEN sold the 160 acres and the family mived to Spanish Fort in Montague County. The ALLEN and LA FORCE families separately in the 1870 census, both living in Montague County. Luana ALLEN eventually married H. J. JUSTIN the bootmaker. They were my g.grandparents.
I am interested in information on the ALLEN and LA FORCE families.

I am inquiring about my grandfather, D.O. Baker, his brother, Jesse Baker and D. O. Baker's wife, Pauline Baker. They lived in Granbury at the beginning of the century. My father's name was Jesse W. Baker. He was named after his father's brother Jesse. I understand that they had businesses on the square - a hardware store, etc. I do not know the date of birth for my grandfather or grandmother and am not sure about date of their deaths. My father was very secretive about his family. I have reason to believe my father had been married before which we only found out about recently and that he may have had another child. My father had 6 children by my mother - I am the oldest. My father was born 1/28/05. Does anyone know of anyone still in Granbury who may be related to this branch of the Baker family. D. O. had three children - my father, a brother, M. O. Baker and a sister, Velma. I believe the Baker-Carmichael house was either the house my grandfather lived in or my great-uncle Jesse resided in. I have not had a chance to get to Granbury to look up records, etc. I am also very interested in finding out about my grandmother, Pauline. I know nothing about her or her side of the family. Would appreciate hearing from anyone who might have an inkling of any information I could follow up on. Thanks.

My husband's early ancestors lived near Acton; William Rankin MCCREARY and wife, Avis MAXWELL MCCREARY. His mother was a GREGORY. There is a small street in Acton named McCreary, near Cleveland & Stembridge. Does anyone know who this is named for? I am trying to locate their old homesite. Hiram Steele bought the property. Subject: John Franklin Miller Family Records
From: Uganasda@aol.com
Hello,
My name is Debbie Scott and I am the granddaughter of Rose Lee Miller born in Granbury, Tx on September 28, 1901 and the great granddaughter of John Franklin Miller and Martha Elizabeth Treadway Miller (often went by nicknames, Lennie, Linnie, Mattie, etc). married in Hood County on May 17, 1896. I am piecing together my family history and would like and documentation that you can find on this family. They belonged to and attended the Methodist Church and lived in Granbury until my grandmother was 16 (1917). My grandmother's siblings were: Franklin Miller born in Granbury, TX on February 17, 1897, Louis Miller born in Granbury in March, 1899, Manson Miller (died as a baby, don't know birth date), William Miller born in Granbury in 1904, and John Miller (dates unknown). My grandmother again was Rose Miller born on September 28, 1901. I'm sure that she went to the local schools at that time. I would be happy to pay for any work/copies/orginals of records on where they lived. I have a June 22, 1900 census that says they lived in Hood County at that time and owned a farm. The number of farm schedule was 262. They were in precincts 4,7 or 1 East of Brazos.

Following message was previously transmitted to Hood County Genealogical Society. It is reposted here as a Query for historical record. Subject: Sterling (S. C.) CROSS et al Date: Thu, 11 Sep 1997 09:01:48 +0000 From: sstring <sstring@sisna.com To: granbury@emcee.com If I may, I would like to tell you my little story. I have been searching for info re my grandfather John HALL for about four years now. John was born abt. 1860 possibly in TX. I say possibly because it varies from census to census. From 1900 until his death in 1937 I find him on the census' in MT. It is the period of time before this that I am trying to find. John says his parent's are David and Mary Annie KING HALL. I have searched and searched and searched. The only link I have to grandpa before MT is Sterling CROSS. I just made this discovery last week! Grandpa was on a cattle drive from TX to MT in 1881 with the following men; 'Bud' ALLISON, 'Jake' WILLIAMSON, 'Cal' STEWART, 'Charley' BUCKLY, 'Charley' DAVLEN, 'Smokey' HARVEY, 'Sam BASS, 'Bill' HUMBLE, 'Fred' GARDNER, 'Sam' BENSON, Sterling CROSS!! and John LEE, the trail boss. As I said Sterling is the first real link I have and it has taken me four years to find this. Sterling C. CROSS md. Araminta WASTSON in 1845 in Navarro, TX. They are on the 1850 census in Navarro, 1860 they are in Erath Co., 1870 Erath Co. and 1880 they are in Hood. From the Navarro Co. page I found the following...first Chief Justice of Navarro Co. Dr. John Young followed by Edward H. Tarrant and later Sterling C. CROSS. Sterling was an atty. at law, born abt. 1826 in TN. Parents? Sterling had a son Sterling C. Cross Jr. born 1859 (although his name later is listed as Sterling P. Cross). I think Sterling Jr. is the one that was with my grandfather on the cattle drive as they would be about the same age. A cousin tells a story of how during the drive "when we got to CO we had some trouble with the vigilantes and we though ol' Sterling Cross was dead" but he later looked my grandpa up in MT. Sterling Jr. is listed in TX in 1900, 1910 and 1920 so apparently he returned to TX. Is there anyone there who is familiar with the Cross' in Hood Co.? Do any of the other names sound familiar? Does anyone know anything about the Hall's? Watson's? There must be some kind of bio about Sterling Sr. since he was a County Judge at one time??

Comments: I am chasing my 1880 relatives who settled into Hood County for several years until the drought ran them out. I believe that William Monroe Brazell is buried in the Rock Church cemetery. I am particularly interested in finding Robert Cunningham, his father-in-law. I appreciate your efforts in providing the information in web-page. It is well organized and very interesting.
Best Regards
