GISD sends message about Yik Yak post ‘regarding a gun on campus’

Granbury High School officials released a statement this morning (Dec. 2) about an anonymous social media post “regarding a gun on campus.”

Here is the full GISD statement, which was sent to parents of all GHS students via the Remind app, which is a school-based texting service, along with traditional text messaging:

“Granbury High School is aware of an anonymous post on the YikYak app regarding a gun on campus. GISD security staff is working with local law enforcement to determine the source of this post. At this point, there is no determination regarding the legitimacy of this post or whether it is a hoax. School administration and security are taking necessary precautions during the school day.”

GISD spokesman Jeff Meador told the Hood County News, “We have to take it seriously until we have certainty that it’s not a legitimate threat.”

Meador said that the Yik Yak social media smart phone app originated in 2013, as an anonymous format for those who used it to post messages. It was reportedly shut down about four years ago after various complaints. Meador noted that the Yik Yak app relaunched this year under new ownership. Yik Yak messages can only be seen within a five-mile radius of where they originate, Meador added.
