GPD: Case involving GMS student’s hands being burned turned over to DA

Posted

A Granbury Middle School student suffered third-degree burns on his hands on April 1 during what the Granbury ISD described as “a science class experiment,” and the Granbury Police stated today (April 5) that the incident “will be submitted to the District Attorney’s Office for review.”

GPD Lt. Russell Grizzard noted in an email to the HCN, “The initial investigation indicates a GMS teacher, a 37-year-old Granbury woman, put hand sanitizer in the hands of a 12-year-old male student and lit the hand sanitizer as part of a science experiment. This had reportedly been done multiple times throughout the day with other students without incident, but the student in question suffered possible 3rd degree burns on his hands. The incident is under investigation and will be submitted to the District Attorney’s Office for review.”

A GISD Facebook post on Tuesday states, “A Granbury Middle School teacher has resigned and is no longer an employee of the school district. This follows a student injury on Friday during a science class experiment. Campus officials have turned this matter over to law enforcement and proper authorities for further investigation.”

Grizzard said that no other information can be released at this time, and that the case is still being investigated.
