HOOD OUTDOORS Spring feeding frenzy slow to arrive so far

MICHAEL ACOSTA

As a licensed professional fishing guide, Michael Acosta shows you how to find them. The Granbury resident of 30 years has been fishing all of his life, and has been a licensed guide since 1998.

Most anglers on our area lakes are waiting on the spring feeding frenzy that normally occurs this time of the year.  Usually the feeding frenzy has already started, but this year the winter has hung around a little longer.  It looks as though the ground hog was right on the money.

Those water temperatures that bring on active feeding for most species are just around the corner.  The warmer weather this last week will surely raise the overall temperature of the lake and will bring on the action.  Look for fish pushing bait to the surface and an increase in the bird action.  The colder weather pushes the fish to the bottom of the channel. The warming waters will bring them up and they will start feeding more often.

The water temperatures recently were in the low 50s.  Temperatures were slow to rebound due to the brutal weather we had in weeks past. Water temperatures will likely be in the upper 50s and possibly low 60s by the time this article is published.

There has been some good action already, especially for black bass on those warmer afternoons.  The sand bass action was delayed some, but should be in full force shortly.  I was able to catch striped bass under the birds this last weekend.  Catfishing has been excellent on the upper ends and the crappie catches are improving in the shallows.

EXCITING TIME

This is an exciting time of the year for us anglers.  The chance of catching big fish rises tremendously.  I would recommend staying abreast of the lake conditions and fishing reports, and be ready to get on the water on short notice.

I will keep some deep water presentations ready for those colder days, but I will be ready to work the top if necessary.  I will also keep a crappie rig ready, just in case.

You don’t want to miss the morning bite. However, the warmest part of the day may be your best choice.

Spring is exciting for many reasons and fishing is one of those for many. See you on the water.

HOOD COUNTY

FISHING REPORT

Granbury water temperatures are rebounding.  Some fish kills have been reported.  If you see any dead or dying fish, please report to the Brazos River Authority or the Texas Parks and Wildlife department (512-389-4848).

Striped bass fishing was good to excellent this last weekend on soft plastics fished mid-lake.  Look for birds to point you the way.  Largemouth bass are good near main lake points and are better on the warmer days.  Crappies are moving into the creeks and can be taken on small jigs or minnows.  Channel catfish action is good near town on cut shad.  The sand bass reports are slow on the upper ends.

OTHER AREAS

On other reservoirs, Possum Kingdom Lake sand bass are good to excellent in the back of Cedar Creek and upstream near Costellos Island.  Lake Whitney striped bass are excellent on swim baits and live bait midlake near McCown Valley.  Look for the birds as well.
