Granbury tops century mark with 100-68 win over Brownwood.

What a turnaround for the Granbury High School Pirates Tuesday night at the James Wann Sports Center.

It looked like the Pirates’ ship was going to be sunk early Tuesday night against Brownwood as the Lions raced out to a 20-5 lead, but Granbury caught fire behind the three-point arc, rocking the basket 16 times from long range for a 100-68 win.

It was a first quarter filled with miscues for the Pirates (8-12), who looked out of sync and kept turning over the ball, which led to Brownwood (15-5) taking quick advantage.

GHS coach David Breazeale called two timeouts during the Lions’ run to slow the momentum. With up-and-down play in the Fredericksburg tournament, Breazeale started to see flashes of greatness.

“We didn’t panic or collapse, and that’s good for us,” Breazeale said. “We got a lot of guys in the game who need to perform for us in district. The biggest thing is we are starting to trend upward, and it has taken us a while.”

Corbin King got hot-handed from the corner and hit four-of-five three-points shots and scored 15 of his game-high 23 points in the first quarter. The run kept the Pirates close, heading into the second quarter as Brownwood maintained a 25-20 advantage.

A 27-11 second-frame run by the Pirates shifted the momentum fueled by GHS sixth man Payton Plash, who led a scoring surge.

“We have a lot of guys who are playing pretty good right now, so we will see — we have one more game, and then we start district. Things are going better,” Breazeale said.

Plash hit eight points in the quarter while Sawyer Schenewark dumped in six, and Dylon Couto struck seven of his nine points in the stanza.

“Things turned so quick for us tonight we were down 20-5 to up 28-27,” Breazeale said. “Plash coming off the bench was a lift, and Corbin hitting four out of five threes didn’t hurt either.”

The Pirates will host Cleburne (9-13) Jan. 11 and are set to open District 5-5A play Jan. 14, at home against Brewer (12-9).

Scoring—Corbin King 23, Payton Plash 19, Isaiah Trejo 16, Sawyer Schenewark 11, Kensington Colston 9, Dylon Couto 9, Anthony Salgado 5, Trey Gray 3, Bryson Sparks 3, True Hughes 2.
