50th birthday

The 50th anniversary celebration of Lake Granbury and DeCordova Bend Dam is postponed because of the controvirus pandemic.

The celebration was planned for May 2, 2020. The poster contest, however, will continue.

“We are not canceling the event, but we hesitate to schedule an alternate date at this point,” said Brazos River Authority Public Information Officer Judi Pierce. “We hope to schedule a date once we know it will be safe to gather a few hundred people at the lake.”

If families are interested in submitting a poster, they are welcome to do so at any time.

“This could be a great project for students while they remain out of school,” Pierce said.

Local artists of all ages are invited to illustrate their views of the lake and the dam with a theme of “50 years in Hood County.”

The artwork can be in any medium that won’t smear using a poster of no more than 18 x 24 inches.

Entry categories are by age: Kindergarten – Grade 5, Grades 6–8, Grades 9–12 and adult.

Posters will be judged by a committee of local representatives.

Entry forms and contest rules may also be obtained via email request at information@brazos.org.

Construction on Lake Granbury began in December 1966 with a groundbreaking ceremony at the site of the DeCordova Bend Dam. Construction was completed in late 1969, and a formal dedication attended by hundreds was held during the spring of 1970.
