The benefit at Brock’s Food & Drink for the Canales family on Sunday was a success, with a total of $9,952 raised.

Hood County residents Robert and Gloria Canales lost their home and all of their personal belongings in a fire on Oct. 23.

With the help of friend and neighbor Rosanne Kayl, a benefit at Brock’s was organized to raise money for the couple.

The benefit raised $5,595 in cash and check donations, $1,860 in door donations and $317 in raffle tickets, bringing the cash total to $7,772. Wood’s Furniture also donated $1,000 and Rawhide Rustic Furniture donated an estimated $800 bed to the Canales family, bringing the grand total to almost $10,000 raised.

Several local businesses donated gift certificates and other items, including: Garcia’s Mexican Restaurant & Cantina, Petsense, El Chico, Arrow Feed & Ranch, Hoffbrau Steak & Grill House, La Fiesta Mexican Grill and Cantina, Mesquite Pit, AutoZone, Lowe’s Home Improvement, Upscale Spa and Nails, Pate’s Hardware and Acton Baptist Church.

“It was a big turnout,” Kayl said. “I just feel so thankful for the community, for the bands, for the volunteers who helped work the event. It was just amazing. The Canaleses are so very grateful and so am I. It was just a wonderful day and it did everybody's heart good.”

“Our town has never experienced as much pain as it is going through right now, James Brock, owner of Brock’s Food & Drink, told the HCN on Monday. “Five people that I love are in the hospital today dying. Between the pandemic, economy, disasters and sickness, it’s easy to lose hope and our focus. Thank God for days like yesterday. The whole community came together to love on the Canaleses and to give them a hand.

“Over 100 people came to lift them up and (close to) $10,000 was raised with more to come. What a beautiful day full of music, food, auctions, raffles and love. It’s the kind of day that restores your faith.

"I told them that one thing I know for sure is that storms always end. God bless the Canaleses and the good people of Granbury.”
