Children’s theater production a big success

PECAN PLANTATION BITS

A Mississippi native who has been a Texas transplant for 27 years, Diane Long is a wife, mother and English teacher who has written Pecan Plantation Bits for 14 years cumulatively. She spends her time gathering neighborhood news and teaching students how to avoid passive voice.

After an absence from Pecan Plantation in 2020, the Missoula Children’s Theater crew returned to our neighborhood last month, and their appearance brought a welcomed reunion to the community.

After five days of auditions and rehearsals, 30-plus students performed two productions of “Johnny Appleseed,” both of which were enjoyed (and applauded) by healthy audiences.

Folks participating deemed the week “awesome,” and many thanks go to the sponsors, counselors, and young thespians who brought the show to life.

WELCOME HOME

Two dates are on the calendar for new member orientation, the first of which is today, Saturday, Aug. 7, at 1 p.m. The second gathering comes Tuesday, Aug. 17 at 10 a.m. Both meetings will happen at the Pecan clubhouse ballroom.

To secure a spot or receive more information, contact new member orientation chair Kathie Schoepf at kschoepf@charter.net.

COMMITTEE MEETINGS

Pecan’s Communications Committee meets again Monday, Aug. 9 at 1 p.m. in the upstairs conference room of the Pecan clubhouse. Non-committee members are welcome to attend. For more information on the Communications Committee and its activities, contact committee chair Jennifer Lancaster: jelmwl@yahoo.com.

The Horse Owners’ Committee has its next meeting planned for Tuesday, Aug. 10 at 4 p.m. at the Pecan clubhouse main conference room.  For details about the meeting, folks may contact committee chair Steve Perry at steve.perry82@yahoo.com or board representative Stan Willey at stanwilley55@gmail.com.

SUMMER FUN

The Pecan Plantation Pickleball Association is hosting a pickleball camp for players with special needs.  It will happen Monday, Aug. 9 and Tuesday, Aug. 10 from 1 to 2 p.m. in the PAC gym. The two-day event will include free pickleball instruction, and campers may attend one or both days. Paddles will be provided; participants should wear court shoes. Caregivers should attend with players.

Sign up for these events at the PAC: 817-573-7952.

FALL BAZAAR

The Pecan Plantation Volunteer Fire Department/Emergency Medical Service Auxiliary happily announces another fundraiser for 2021.

On Saturday, Oct. 2, Pecan’s Fall Bazaar (formerly known as the arts and crafts fair) will happen at the PAC from 9 a.m. to 4 p.m.

Many more details will be forthcoming as the date draws closer. For now, bazaar chairperson Joy Rice is seeking vendors for the event, and several spaces are still available.

“Early registration is important in accommodating booth assignment requests,” Rice said.

Interested merchants may contact her at 254-289-2224 or JDRauxiliary@gmail.com for more details and to receive a registration form.

All proceeds raised at the event will benefit emergency volunteers in Pecan Plantation.

Also on bazaar day, representatives from Cowtown Gold and Silver will be present to buy gold, silver, and other precious metals. Operating hours will run from 9 a.m. to 4 p.m., and Pecan’s emergency service groups will receive 10% of the profits from metals sold.

AUXILIARY MEETING

In addition, the Auxiliary met last week to discuss plans for the bazaar, as well as hear from Jay Webster, Hood County’s emergency management coordinator.

SUCCESSFUL SUMMER

The final gathering of golf, tennis and swim camp came last week. The staff for these summerlong events deemed the time “a blast” and send thanks to the parents and grandparents who allowed their little ones to attend.

BREAKFAST CLUB

One of the most popular — and longest-running — gatherings in Pecan Plantation has returned to our community.

Wednesday morning Breakfast Club gathers the second and fourth Wednesday of each month at 7:30 a.m. at the Pecan Clubhouse.

Attendees enjoy a program, a hearty breakfast prepared by the clubhouse staff, and of course fellowship with neighbors and friends.

Want more information about Breakfast Club and its activities? Send email to breakfastclub@ppoaweb.com to join the official emailing list.

CHIT CHAT

The final Chit Chat ladies’ luncheon of the summer will happen Thursday, Aug. 19. Reservations are due by noon on Friday, Aug. 13. Send email to ppwcres@gmail.com or call 817-964-3139 to secure a spot.

UPCOMING EVENTS

Saturday, Aug. 14 holds Karaoke Night, and Saturday, Aug. 21 will bring Casino Night to the Pecan Clubhouse. Call the front desk to make reservations for these events: 817-573-2641.

SYMPATHY

Our deepest sympathy goes to the family of Richard Wilks, an active member of Pecan Plantation (as well as my neighbor) for more than 20 years, who passed away on July 21. Our sympathy also goes to the family of Kathy Segrest, who passed away July 24.
