Chit chat luncheons: Bright summer highlight for Pecan ladies

Posted

PECAN PLANTATION BITS

A Mississippi native who has been a Texas transplant for 27 years, Diane Long is a wife, mother and English teacher who has written Pecan Plantation Bits for 14 years cumulatively. She spends her time gathering neighborhood news and teaching students how to avoid passive voice.

When formal meetings of the Pecan Plantation Woman’s Club (PPWC) recess for the summer, fun and fellowship among ladies certainly does not cease.

Thanks to the efforts of Polly Parmer, Cherry Redwine and Elaine Wilks, monthly gatherings continued through the summer of 2021. An informal lunch and time of conversation, a “chit chat” gathering, brought PPWC members and guests together before a new year of Woman’s Club activities begins. A big pat on the back to Polly, Cherry and Elaine for their facilitating these well-attended and much-enjoyed events.

With fall around the corner, the PPWC will meet collectively again on Thursday, Sept. 16, when President Annelle Teal calls the meeting to order.

The PPWC, whose tenets include friendship, fellowship, philanthropy and pursuit of the arts, invites Pecan ladies to join the day.

POOL HOURS

Summer is winding down, and the clubhouse pool hours have been adjusted.

From today, Saturday, Aug. 28, to Sunday, Sept. 5, the pool will be open on Fridays from 5 to 8 p.m.; Saturdays from 9:30 a.m. to 8 p.m.; and Sundays from 9:30 a.m. to 6 p.m. On Labor Day, Monday, Sept. 6, the pool will open at 9:30 a.m. and close for the summer season at 6 p.m.

PARTY TIME

Sunday, Sept. 5 will bring a Labor Day luau and street dance to Pecan, the last such gathering of the summer season.

The evening will feature hula dancers from 6 to 7 p.m., live music from 7 to 10 p.m., plus food, drinks and games.

Lawn chairs and golf carts are welcome at this event, sponsored by the Entertainment Committee.

With fall coming, junior tennis is on the calendar.

Beginning Wednesday, Sept. 8, young tennis players in Pecan will learn from Coach John on the tennis courts from 4:30-5:30 p.m. Sign up in the tennis pro shop: 817-579-9412.

BOARD SERVICE

Pecan Plantation thanks Johnathan Jones for his tenure of service on our community’s board of directors. Volunteers are vital to our neighborhood’s livelihood, and we thank Johnathan for the time he served.

More information will come soon to Pecan members about filling this vacancy on our governing board.

SERVICE OPPORTUNITY

Nominations are now being taken for the election of one member to the Pecan Fire and Emergency Medical Service Board of Directors.

The annual meeting of the Pecan Plantation Volunteer Fire Department and EMS will be at 10 a.m. on Saturday, Nov. 13. At that time, a term of office will expire for one member of the Board of Directors.

Pecan Plantation members who would like to serve a three-year term on the emergency services’ board of directors are needed. Folks with past experience or qualifying backgrounds may submit a one page résumé to Ray Taylor (chairman of the Nominating Committee) in person at the Pecan Plantation Fire and EMS office at 9518 Monticello Drive or send paperwork by email to ppems@ppvfdems.com.

The deadline for submission is Monday, Sept. 27.

QUESTION FORUM

The question forum found on Pecan’s website continues. Members may submit inquiries to the email address of board@ppoaweb.com, and the answers will be posted under the “Weekly Q&A” tile on the website.

Board members thank members for their questions and desire to keep Pecan a great place to live!

EVENT CHANGE

The Pecan Planation Art Guild (PPAG) regrets to announce the cancellation of its 2021 Gallery Night planned for next month.

Guild members had hoped for the event to happen in a manner safe for all participants, but since such an occasion looks doubtful, acting on the side of safety is the result.

Therefore, the PPAG will begin planning and looking forward to Gallery Night 2022 when artists and their admirers may fellowship in gallery style once again.

EVENT CHANGE

The Pecan Plantation health fair scheduled for Oct. 8 will not happen when originally planned, but the organizers of the event are now focusing on a spring health fair instead. Wanting to be cautious and safe, the deferral of the fair was made with careful consideration and based on the recommendation of the organizing committee in conjunction with local health care professionals.

Folks with questions about the fair and its rescheduling may reach out to John Cross, who chairs the Health Fair Committee: jljcross65@gmail.com.

As a reminder to Pecaners: recyclable items are no longer gathered at the PAC. However, items donated for “Fidget Chick” blanket making are accepted and appreciated. Contact the PAC with questions or for more information: 817-573-7952.
