New growth seen here Is promising

CRESSON  MAYOR

Cresson Mayor Teena Putteet Conway, a native of Cresson, attended school for two years in the historic Cresson school. She is a Granbury High School graduate, and earned a BBA from Baylor University. After marrying, then raising her family in the Metroplex, she returned to Cresson after 40 years.

Two weeks ago, at City Hall, we had the dead limbs from the palm trees removed. Right at the very top of the trees were one or two green sprigs trying to reach for the sky and bring life back into these beautiful palms.

It is simply amazing to consider all the foliage that was damaged with the unusually heavy snow in February. Now, here we are at the end of July, and we are feeling the heat (and humidity), but not as bad as it has been in past years. Check back with me in August and I will be singing a different tune!

Our City Hall has the blessing of the former tenant, Tim Clark, Clark Realty, who first used the building and property as his landscaping headquarters then moving on to real estate. Most everyone that walks into City Hall takes their time and observes all the beautiful plants and waterfall that spreads across the front of the building alongside Highway 377.  Children stop along the ponds to check for any fish that may be there.

On the other hand, most folks in their cars are speeding by to get to the big city of their choice. The faster they go, the more we want them to slow down as the work inside of the concrete barriers has picked up as they work to get ready to divert traffic in between those lanes. Please do remember that the Department of Public Safety wants you to slow down, too!

In a recent meeting, we were told that traffic would temporarily shift into those newly formed lanes between the concrete barriers. Now, TxDOT has this all planned out and will make every attempt to ensure safety as that is their highest priority. But we know there will be some slowing down of traffic while they work, so please plan to be patient. Just think, we are being told that by September of 2023, the Relief Route will be completed. Keep your fingers crossed!

Cresson continues to grow. The developers at Putteet Hill are closing on lots as we speak and preparing the roads and infrastructure for their development. With another development team out of Parker County, there is discussion of very nice additional homes being planned for another area near downtown Cresson.

On Highway 377 in Parker County, Wagner’s of Australia is moving quickly with their groundwork, in preparation of building their plant site. Then, on Highway 171, there is a new business coming in (industrial) as well as discussion around additional homes. So, with the completion of the Relief Route, Cresson is positioned for more families to move into our little city and still get to the surrounding cities via the faster route (no more being late due to the train stoppage).

Just like the City’s palm trees are trying to recover with new growth, our little city is attempting to grow even though with growth there are growing pains. We continue to consider how to run a city on sales tax alone. So far, most citizens do not desire to add ad valorem tax, which is typically referred to as property tax. For now, let us sit back and keep an eye on both the palm trees success and the city of Cresson’s success!
