On June 25, area golfers will have an opportunity to play golf on one of the most popular courses in this area, help support military veterans — and even have a chance at winning a prize of $22,000 in a hole-in-one contest.

The inaugural four-person scramble tournament for a nonprofit organization called Project 22 will begin with a 9 a.m. shotgun start, on the Links Course at Squaw Valley Golf Course in Glen Rose. The check-in time will be 8 a.m.

One of the tournament’s organizers — and the founder of Project 22 Texas,, Michael Brown of Stephenville, told the HCN that it’s a campaign to bring awareness and information to rural communities about veteran suicide. Brown noted that the name, Project 22, was chosen based on the fact that an average of 22 military veterans take their own lives each day.

Email entries to: project22tx@gmail.com. The deadline for the $400 per team entry fee is set for June 6. That covers 18 holes of scramble play, cart, range, lunch and drinks.

Checks should be made payable Project 22 and mailed to 2289 Northwest Loop, Stephenville, TX 76401. Entries can also be paid via Venmo (@project22tx), one payment per team. Include entry info: Four player’s names, phone number and shirt size).

In addition to the hole-in-one contest, there will be contests for closet-to-the-pin and longest drive.

The first-place winner prize is (4) weekend getaways for two. Second place and D.A.I. prizes will also be awarded.

Starting this fall, the group’s organizers are planning to team with local high schools to feature a Project 22 football game of the week.

A Project 22 email provided by Brown states that they will be bringing military vehicles to the game of the week for fans to enjoy. Also, the news release stated, the group will have a booth set up with information of different organizations that can help a veteran and his family deal with PTSD and veteran suicide. The Project 22 game of the week is an opportunity to celebrate the veterans of the local communities and thank them for their sacrifice to our great nation.”
