Sheriff: Longtime fugitive captured in Mexico

Posted

The Hood County Sheriff’s Office was notified on May 22 that Thomas Edward Demopoulos — a fugitive of justice from Hood County since 2013 on a first-degree felony charge of continuous sexual abuse of a child — is now in custody, Lt. Johnny Rose stated in a news release.

Demopoulos, 55, (pictured while in custody and being flown to the U.S.) was located and arrested in Oaxaca de Juarez, Mexico, by the Office of the Inspector General for the Texas Department of Criminal Justice and assisted by the U.S. Marshal’s Office, according to Rose.

Also, Rose noted, Demopoulos “has a federal warrant for embezzlement” and is currently being held at a federal holding facility in Fort Worth.

“Eventually he will end up in Hood County and will face a district judge and jury on his sexual abuse case that is pending and was never resolved due to him fleeing the country,” Rose stated.

Sheriff Roger Deeds was quoted as saying, “This arrest has been a long time coming and I’m so proud to know he’s in custody. We never gave up hope and knew eventually he would be arrested.”
