Sam Houston is the publisher of the Hood County News. He is also an actor, author, playwright, performer and entertainment producer/promoter.

I am very pleased to report that wherever I travel in Hood County, I am approached by complete strangers and told how much they like the NEW Hood County News!

It has been a little more than six months since the ownership/leadership changes at HCN and judging by the rise in subscriptions and comments, people are once again enjoying the newspaper. While we at the paper are pleased we have received such a positive response, we are not going to rest on our laurels! Here are some fun and important additions to the newspaper that you will see in the very near future.

Starting March 22 we will have a new website! We hired a firm that handles the websites of the Dallas Morning News, Kansas City Star and the St. Louis Post-Dispatch among others and they have created a web site that allow us to efficiently provide information to our readers.

The site will allow us to utilize more video, and to reach our audience with updated breaking news during the time between our regular editions. Like all major technological changes, we want the changeover to be as efficient and painless as possible.

There are instructions in this edition and those instructions will be repeated in the Saturday edition. If you have trouble getting online access, call the office and our friendly staff will walk you through the steps. We are excited this new website will allow us to be an even more accessible community newspaper!

In the next few weeks, we will be adding pages that we call the Activities section. This portion of the paper will cover the many ways the people of Hood County spend their leisure time.

There will be articles about boating, fishing, hunting, water skiing, hiking, motocross, shooting, equine events and lots more. We anticipate folks will enjoy reading stories about the people and activities that help to create the lifestyle that is truly unique to Hood County.

Soon, we will be adding pages that we are calling the Youth section. This will include stories and photos about the youth leagues, Boy Scouts, Girls Scouts, church youth groups, and many other ways our youths spend their time. We feel like nothing says “community newspaper” like coverage of the young people. Who does not like to read about the accomplishments and aspirations of children?

Through all of this we will continue to evaluate the information we bring to you. The Hood County News team uses our Mission Statement as our guiding light, and we will continue to work to become the very best community newspaper in Texas. Thanks so much for allowing us to be part of your community!

Thought for the day: Live your life so when the final summons comes, your obituary runs more than one column long!

Until next time…
