Council sets goals for city

The Granbury City Council has approved a strategic planning report based on a day-long goal-setting workshop held last month.

The report was drafted by Strategic Government Resources (SGR) and included one-on-one pre-workshop interviews SGR conducted with elected officials.

The report was approved last week.

The council listed the following as pressing issues for citizens: traffic issues related to Highway 377; the Planning & Zoning Commission approval process; bringing community groups together in partnership; and using incentives to draw light industry and manufacturing.

SGR asked council members to prioritize big “pillars” toward which the city should be directed over the next seven to 10 years.

They listed, in order of importance: infrastructure; economic development (working with the county and chamber); tourism; development of city-owned property; utilization of Lake Granbury (involving the Brazos River Authority); and public safety.

The council also worked together to identify key “mile markers” – indications that the city is moving in the right direction at the right speed toward establishing each “pillar.”

One of the mile markers for infrastructures is completing a sprinkler system for historic buildings on the square by 2020.

A mile marker for the tourism category is a contingency plan if the lake level drops like it did several years ago. City Manager Chris Coffman praised the council for being “forward-thinking and taking ownership” of the city’s future. He said the city has a history of doing things “pro-actively.”
