County imposes burn ban

Posted

Hood County is under a 90-day burn ban by order of the Commissioners Court.

No outdoor burning is allowed.

The use of fireworks outside the Granbury city limits is okay, however, even though Fire Marshal Jeff Young wishes otherwise.

“If I had my way, I would ban fireworks all the time,” he stated.

Young explained at the regular meeting of the Commissioners Court on Tuesday that despite the dryness, current conditions do not meet “trigger points” that are outlined in a county policy that was adopted in 2011 and updated in 2016.

Banning fireworks would go against the county’s policy, he told the court, and would cost fireworks vendors considerable sums of money this close to the holiday weekend.

Young said that a review of the county’s policy will be conducted after the July 4th holiday.

He also stated that fireworks vendors have already acted on their own to increase safety levels. He said they are not selling “sticks and fins” and have shortened their selling period to just four days.

Under the burn ban, smokers, barbecue grills, Solo Stoves, and chimeneas can be used as long as they are monitored and extinguished.

Outdoor welding must be done with a spotter with a water source to stop grass fires.
