Feeling the heat

Preparing 325 meals five days a week is a feat in itself, but preparing those meals without a working cooler or freezer makes the task significantly more challenging.

After 20 years of service, the walk-in cooler and walk-in freezer at the Hood County Senior Center are officially kaput.

It will cost about $10,000 to have the mechanical parts replaced, according to Executive Director Jeanette Scott.

Scott said that the day after she began seeking bids for needed cooler parts “the freezer started acting up,” and the problem was more urgent than the one posed by the cooler.

Both units were purchased at the same time two decades ago, she said.

The Hood County Committee on Aging is in need of donations to help pay for the needed upgrades.

Scott said that of the 325 meals that are prepared Monday-Friday, about 250 are delivered through the Meals on Wheels program. The remainder of the meals are served to those who come to the Senior Center, located at 501 E. Moore St.

Donations can be made the following ways:

■ Text GIVE or DONATE to 817-270-6923;

■ Contribute online at https://hoodcountyseniorcenter.networkforgood.com/;

■ Write checks payable to the Hood County Committee on Aging and mail them to the Hood County Senior Center, P.O. Box 849, Granbury, Texas 76048;

■ Or drop by the center.

Scott said that for now her church, Acton United Methodist, is allowing her to store food in the coolers and freezers in the church’s youth building and fellowship hall.

However, that requires a lot of transporting back and forth across town.

Scott said she is not terribly worried about the situation.

“What I’ve seen so far is that in Granbury everybody just pitches in and gets it done,” she said.
