Financial support helps extend Weekend Food Bags

Posted

With a lot of community help, Mission Granbury has assembled and delivered 6,500 weekend food bags for kids since the middle of March.

Historically, this program has only been active and budgeted during the school year. However, we’re hearing concerns that losing this food source over source over the summer could be devastating for many families.

After a short discussion, our board of directors voted unanimously to “find the money somewhere” and extend the Weekend Food Bags program over summer vacation.

This is a $21,000 unbudgeted project.

Our food bags contain items that provide food and snacks to feed a child over the weekend. Instant oatmeal, Pop-tarts, fruit cups, snack crackers, cans of ravioli or soup and macaroni and cheese are the staples for our bags.

With the help of local grocers, we are able to order items in bulk (when they’re available) and keep our food costs down to about $4 per bag. We will be preparing 350 to 375 bags per week for the next 14 weeks.

Thank you to all the community partners who are helping us continue this vital program. Your donations of the backpack food items or funds to help purchase these items will be critical as we move forward.

To make the most efficient use of everyone’s funds, please check www.missiongranbury.org to find out what our most immediate need is for each week.

Typically, we always need mac and cheese as it’s the hardest item to find. Some weeks we have plenty of oatmeal but no Pop-tarts while other weeks, ravioli is the greatest need.
