Four GHS students to compete in state academic meet

Four Granbury High School students are headed to the UIL state academic meet after advancing from regional competition on April 16-17at Saginaw High School.

State qualifiers from GHS are Nathan Gibson (current issues and events), Carter McKay (social studies), Madalyn Rickert (social studies) and Jonathan Rositas (science and chemistry). 

Alternates are Alexander Funk (literary criticism), Kate Davis (prose interpretation), Jaydin Riley (persuasive speaking) and Jordyn Stevens (ready writing).

GHS placed third overall – only behind Abilene Wylie and Lubbock – among all Class 5A schools in Region I.

Students in the top three individual places qualify for the state meet, as do all members of a first-place team. 

Students placing at the regional event were:

  • Accounting:  Team – Alexander Call, Jade Kisner, Griselda Landa, second; Individual – Alexander Call, fifth; Lillian Welch, sixth
  • Current Events and Issues:  Nathan Gibson, third (state qualifier)
  • Headline Writing:  Carolina Garcia, fifth
  • Informative Speaking:  Jaden Graves, fifth
  • Literary Criticism:  Team – Lauren Bower, Blaize Cross, Alexander Funk, second; Individual – Alexander Funk, fourth (state alternate)
  • Persuasive Speaking:  Jaydin Riley, fourth (state alternate)
  • Prose Interpretation:  Kate Davis, fourth (state alternate)
  • Ready Writing:  Jordyn Stevens, fourth (state alternate)
  • ScienceTeam – Kaylee Black, Blaize Cross, Alexander Funk, Jonathan Rositas, second; Individual Overall – Jonathan Rositas, third (state qualifier); Chemistry – Jonathon Rositas, first (state qualifier)
  • Social Studies:  Madalyn Rickert, first (state qualifier); Carter McKay, third (state qualifier)

 The UIL state meet will be held on Saturday, May 1, at hub sites across the state, with Granbury students competing at Brock High School.
