GHS debate third overall at Big Spring tourney

Posted

The Granbury High School speech and debate team had another successful weekend in Big Spring Saturday.

Granbury took home the third place overall sweepstakes trophy.

“Our 12 kids held their own against schools who arrived in busses with 20-40 students,” GHS debate coach Shyller McGuire said. “I am beyond proud of my team!”

Peter Schwarck won first place in domestic extemporaneous speaking, won third place in Congressional debate and added a fourth place finish in impromptu speaking. Mary Withey was the Top Speaker in Lincoln-Douglas debate and won first place, beating teammate Jay-din Riley in the finals.

Schwarck and Withey have both qualified for the Texas Forensic Association state meet, which will be held in El Paso in March.

Arturo Villegas was a semifinalist in Lincoln-Douglas debate, giving Granbury three of the top four spots. The team of Samantha Byrd and Cammie Beeson made quarterfinals in Cross-Examination debate, and Byrd won silver in foreign extemporaneous speaking.

Citlalli Arriaga joined Schwarck in impromptu speaking finals, finishing in sixth place.

The debate team will next compete at the San Angelo Central Swing this weekend. Granbury will send debaters to the UIL district Congressional Debate meet at Lake Worth High School on Nov.
