Hattox announces bid for court-at-law judge

Former district attorney Richard Hattox has announced that he will run for county court-at-law judge in the 2022 Republican primary.

A native Texan, Hattox was appointed district attorney for Hood County in 1986 by then-Gov. Bill Clements, becoming the youngest DA in Texas.

At that time, the county was heavily Democratic, but Hattox ran for a full term as a Republican and was elected.

During his time in office, Hattox presided over criminal trials that received national press coverage. He established and led the STOP Narcotics Task Force that served Hood, Johnson, and Somervell counties.

“I served for 18 years with integrity and honor,” Hattox stated in a news release.

Now in private practice with an office just off the square, the former prosecutor has served on the boards of local government, civic clubs and charitable organizations, including People Helping People, Mission Granbury, the chamber, the Granbury Opera House, the Historic Granbury Merchants Association, the city’s Planning and Zoning Commission, Rotary Club of Granbury, the Granbury Optimist Club, the Granbury Lions Club, and the Tolar Booster Club.

“I have been voted ‘Best Attorney in Hood County’ by patrons of the Hood County News for many years,” Hattox stated, adding that he is board certified as an expert in criminal law by the Texas Board of Legal Specialization.

Hattox was raised in Eastland County and is a former combat soldier who served as a paratrooper with the 82nd Airborne Division.

He attended college on the GI Bill, graduating from Tarleton State University and Texas Tech University with degrees in accounting, computer science, a master’s in business administration and a doctorate in law.

Hattox and his wife Mary have homes in Granbury and Tolar. Between them, they have seven children and 10 grandchildren. Their children attended Hood County schools.

The couple attends Tolar Baptist Church.

“I am a dedicated constitutionalist,” Hattox stated in the news release. “I will work to keep you safe, and to honor your freedoms.”

The filing period for the March 1 primaries will open Saturday and run through 6 p.m. Dec. 13.
