King of the butterflies

Posted

The mighty monarch butterflies migrate through Texas from September through November as they journey to their winter home in Mexico.

To support and protect these butterflies, Lake Granbury Master Gardeners (LGMG), in cooperation with the city of Granbury, will celebrate monarch season by hosting a number of educational and recreational activities this fall.

MIGHTY MIGRATION

On Thursday, Sept. 26 at 5:30 p.m., LGMG will present The Mighty Monarch Migration, a free educational program at Granbury’s Home Depot. Participants will learn about growing butterfly friendly plants, identifying monarch butterflies and more.

Romancing the Monarch, A Butterfly Festival will be held Saturday, Oct. 5 from 1:30 to 4 p.m. at the LGMG Demonstration Garden behind Hood County Annex 1, 1410 W. Pearl St., Granbury. (Rain date: Sunday, Oct. 6).

“This free event promises plenty of fun for the family while providing an education on the importance of pollinators, such as the beautiful monarch butterfly,” said LGMG spokeswoman Phyllis Webster.

Butterfly releases are at 2:15 and 3:15 p.m. Activities include netting and tagging butterflies, face painting, crafts, interactive learning and photo opportunities. A plant sale featuring butterfly attracting plants will also be onsite. For more information, call 817-579-3280.

Since a sizable crowd is expected for the butterfly festival, offsite parking will be available at the Brazos Drive-In movie theater. The city trolley will offer free rides from the theater to the event from 1 to 4:30 p.m.

The trolley route during event hours will be Lake Granbury Conference Center, LGMG demonstration garden, movie theater, LGMG Demonstration Garden to Lake Granbury Conference Center.

Master Gardeners will host a booth inside the Conference Center Oct. 5 as a participant in the city’s annual LakeFest event. Visitors may obtain information from the Master Gardeners working there about the trolley route and butterfly festival.

Acton Nature Center, 6900 Smokey Hill Ct., will also host a monarch butterfly tagging event on Oct. 5 from 9 a.m. to 1 p.m. For details, visit www.actonnaturecenter.org.
