Lafayette Gun Club Narrowly Defeats Granbury MCJROTC

Shooting their highest score of the season Lafayette Gun Club edged out Granbury MCJROTC 2457.4 to 2441.5 last week in the National Air Rifle League.

Their fourth win in a row. Lafayette Gun Club was led by Victoria Koenig who shot a 617.1. The remaining contributing members were Maria Koenig, Brandon Evans, and Matthew Stout. They are from Yorktown, VA, and are coached by Jason Stout.

Lafayette Gun Club is competing in the Champions Division where they are currently ranked in first place. Within the Junior Rifle Club Conference they are in first place. They have a 6 - 0 record.

Snapping a four game win streak Granbury MCJROTC was led by Julia Czernik who shot a 617.4. The remaining contributing members were Caroline Martin , Sunnee Schumann, and Ashton Arlington. Granbury MCJROTC is from Granbury, TX, and is coached by LtCol Scott Casey.

Granbury MCJROTC is also competing in the Champions Division where they are currently ranked in second place. They have a 5 - 1 record.

Next up Lafayette Gun Club will compete against Ole Mill Rangers from Griffin, GA. Ole Mill Rangers currently has a 6 - 0 record. While Granbury MCJROTC will compete against Fountain Fort Carson AJROTC from Fountain, CO. Fountain Fort Carson AJROTC currently has a 2 - 4 record.

Sponsored by the Orion Scoring System, the league is a national team league for high school teams and junior rifle clubs. The league has two parts. An 8 week regular season going on now, followed by the post-season.

The Champions Division is reserved for the top teams in the country. The top eight teams from the Champions Division regular season will compete in a single elimination tournament for the league championships.

The Distinguished Division are the second tiered teams, followed by the Elite Division.

In each game the teams compete in what is known as a Standing Air Rifle match. The match is nearly identical to the air rifle events in the Olympic Games. Each athlete shoots 60 shots in the standing position, the most difficult position in rifle competitions. Each shot is worth a maximum of 10.9 points. The sum of points scored in the 60 shots is the athlete's total. The team score is comprised of the best four athletes from each team.
