New driver’s license office opens Wednesday

Posted

A new, partial-service driver’s license office will open at Annex 3, 1402 W. Pearl St., at 8 a.m. on Wednesday, April 27.

People will be able to schedule appointments to renew their driver’s licenses or to register name or address changes.

A $5 surcharge will be imposed to help cover the cost of the two employees hired by the county to work in that office.

The full-service Department of Public Safety office at 105 Pine Lane in Tolar will continue to offer full driver’s license services, including written tests and driving tests.

According to Tax Assessor-Collector Andrea Ferguson, who will oversee the partial-service DPS office, there is no phone number for that location, but people can schedule an appointment at a kiosk in the lobby or online at https://public.txdpsscheduler.com.

Precinct 3 Commissioner Jack Wilson, who worked to bring a driver’s license office back to Granbury, said that those who schedule at the kiosk will be taken immediately if others are not being served.

Wilson said that he is scheduled to meet Wednesday afternoon with state Sen. Brian Birdwell’s chief of staff and that he will stress the need for the 2023 Legislature to approve funding for a second full-service DPS office in Hood County.

The Hood Central Appraisal District board is planning to build a new, larger building near Acton Elementary School and hopes to lease a portion of the building to DPS.

Wilson said that, if that happens, the DPS side of the building will feature eight workstations for processing driver’s licenses.
