Opera House dark this weekend

Posted

This weekend will be one of the rare weekends that the theater inside the historic Granbury Opera House will be dark.

And if you’re thinking of maybe catching a performance at the New Granbury Live, well, you can forget it if you don’t already have tickets.

Both weekend shows at the music venue – Gene Watson’s “A Country Legend” and “The Road Less Traveled with Josh Weathers” – are sold out.

It might be a good time to catch a movie, or eat out at one of Granbury’s growing number of restaurants.

In the meantime, though, don’t worry. Plenty of entertainment is coming next week.

Granbury Theatre Company board president Micky Shearon said that this week and through the weekend the theater company’s technical staff is performing a complete maintenance and safety check of all sound and lighting equipment, fly systems, wiring and cabling – “stuff we never get a chance to do because we just run from one show to the next,” he said.

Shearon referred to the rare closure to the public as “a one-weekend outage.”

Things will get lively again next week when the GTC kicks off “Mama Mia!” Opening night will be Friday night (Feb. 22), and shows will run through March 24.

The hit songs of the Swedish pop group Abba – and some dynamic dance numbers performed against the backdrop of a Greek island paradise – tell the story of a mother, a daughter and three possible dads.

Shows are at 7:30 p.m. Fridays, 2 p.m. and 7:30 p.m. Saturdays and 2 p.m. Sundays.

Tickets are $25-$35 and can be purchased online at granburytheatrecompany.org or by calling the box office at 817-579-0952.

As for the New Granbury Live, Wade Hayes will be on stage for a 7:30 p.m. show Friday. He will perform his hit songs “Old Enough to Know Better,” “I’m Still Dancing With You” and “On a Good Night.”

Tickets that include VIP seating and a meet-and-greet are $53 per person. The meet-and-greet will begin at 7 p.m. and will provide an opportunity for guests to pose with the singer for photos.

VIP tickets without the meet-and-greet are $38. Tickets for prime seating are $30.

On Sunday, Feb. 24, there will be a 2 p.m. performance of “The Road Less Traveled with Holly Tucker,” Texas CMA vocalist of the year. The show will include a live interview and audience interaction.

Tickets are $15.

Purchase tickets online at thenewgranburylive.com or by phoning the box office at 1-800-340-9703.
