Percussion honored at board meeting

The Granbury ISD school board honored High School Pirate Band percussion students at a meeting on Aug. 26.

The percussion ensemble was recognized for its qualification to an international competition. GHS will play at the Percussive Arts Society Convention in Indianapolis in 2019.

The PAS is a non-profit organization founded in 1961 that aims to promote percussion education and appreciation worldwide. GHS is one of three high schools from across the world that was chosen for the honor, according to a press release from the district.

The ensemble will play a 50-minute concert for over 5,000 conference attendees.

Members of the 2018-19 ensemble, including 2019 graduating seniors that helped GHS qualify, were Matthew Anchondo, Kyla Asante-Wiredu, Olivia Barone, JJ Beyer, Jackson Brice, Sully Brown, Justin Caldwell, Meghan Childers, Matthew Criswell, Trevor Dawson, Mateo Douglas, Carolina Garcia, Jordan Garrett-Erwin, Nathan Gibson, Adam Gomez, Mason Hadley, Katy Hall, Mykeil Harris, Ty Hintz, Hannah Humphrey, Christian Jobe, Julian Juarez, Grant Kirkland, Jade Kisner, Bryanna Langston, Justin Lloyd, Isaac Maldanado, Anthony Mercurio, Amerson Meyers, Justin Miller, Shelby Mills, Angelina Pena, Jake Pepper, Jolie Rudisaile, Cole Stephens, Phil Tilleman, Palma Underwood, Christopher Van Randen and Sarah Wood.

GHS band director Tahlequah Kirk helps lead percussion. Kirk said the Indianapolis conference is “one of the most prestigious in the world and among the highest achievements for a high school percussion ensemble,” according to the press release.

The conference takes place from Nov. 13-17. Granbury is scheduled to perform at 9 a.m. on Saturday, Nov. 16.
