Azle receivers to test Pirates Friday night

The Granbury Pirates have four regular season games left, including the district finale at Globe Life Park in Arlington.

Granbury and Saginaw were scheduled to play the finale Friday, Nov. 27 in Granbury, but the two schools got together and decided to do “something special for the kids,” Pirate Head Football Coach Chad Zschiesche said. The teams are slated to play Saturday, Nov. 28 at 2 p.m.

Globe Life Park, the Texas Rangers’ former stadium, has been advertising for high school games.

GRANBURY AT AZLE

Meanwhile the Pirates (2-4, 1-2) will tangle with defending district champion Azle (3-1, 1-0) Friday night.

Kickoff is 7 p.m. in Azle.

Boise St. commit wide receiver Eric McAlister (6-3, 190, 4.5) leads the Hornets. He’s joined by other good receivers.

“They put up plenty of points,” Zschiesche said.

On defense the Hornets have large linemen and aggressive linebackers, Zschiesche said.

“They’re a good fundamental team,” the Pirate mentor said. “They’re well coached. They always do a good job over there.”

PIRATES STRUGGLE

The Pirates had trouble finishing drives in the first half Friday night against Brewer.

Granbury spotted the explosive Bears a 24-0 halftime lead. The Pirates put up 33 second-half points, but Brewer added 35 for a 59-33 win.

The Pirates got on the scoreboard in the third quarter via an 80-yard interception return by Darrius Evans.

The Bears, however, answered with a TD of their own to make the score 31-7.

Granbury continued to fight, scoring on a Jadon Rogers 2-yard run to pull within 31-14.

Brewer, however, added two more touchdowns in the third quarter for a commanding 45-14 lead.

Five touchdowns were signaled in the final period, three by Granbury and two by Brewer.

“After you watch the film there were certainly more bright spots than what appeared,” Zschiesche said.

The coach singled out linebackers Tate Baker and Benny Lara.
