Billy Zimmerman of Rockdale was among hundreds showing their hot rods in Hewlett Park last weekend. It was the 45th annual Lone Star Street Rod Association State Run.

The meet has been in Gran-bury for the past several years.

“We really like coming up here,” Zimmerman said.

“There’s something for everyone with the restaurants and shopping on the square. Our wives like that,” Zimmerman said.

“We might go to a music show and meet friends for dinner on the square,” he stated.

Zimmerman’s 1953 Buick is eye-catching. Custom work includes a rear bumper installed upside down, along with modified Packard tail lights. “It look better than what was original on the Buick,” he noted.

And of course air-conditioning has been added. “This is Texas you know,” Zimmerman said.

Zimmerman has had multiple cars including a Model A, a 1939 Chevrolet and a 1965 Corvette.

“I’ve been married to my wife, Cindy, for 49 years and I’m still trying to get her to let me get whatever cars I want,” he said with a wink.

The LSSRA was organized in 1974 to promote vehicle safety and to coordinate rod runs in the state.
