Posted

After 38-rounds, Oak Woods School 4th grader Anshi Prasai beat out 8th grader Preston Kirkland correctly spelling the word “jitterbug” to claim the Hood County Area Spelling Bee championship Thursday at the Granbury ISD Administration Building.

Prasai and Kirkland, a student at Granbury Middle School, went toe-to-toe for 38 rounds before Prasai emerged the victor.

The area contest pitted campus-level winners from seven Granbury campuses. Other competitors were Remi Bennett, a fifth-grader at Baccus Elementary School; Harper Brown, fourth-grader at Acton Elementary School; Titus Cave, fifth-grader at Brawner Elementary School; Maria Hustak, fifth-grader at STEAM Academy at Mambrino; Brendan Thorne, sixth-grader at Acton Middle School. Also competing was Lipan student Katherine Self.

As the Hood County area champion, Prasai advances to the regional contest scheduled for March 8 at Texas Christian University in Fort Worth. That contest will feature more than thirty contestants who won at the area level. The regional winner will have an opportunity to compete in the national competition held in Washington, D.C., in May.

The campus and district spelling bees were open to all students under sixteen who had not passed beyond the eighth grade.
