The nine-year-old boy who died Tuesday, Aug. 9 after suffering a gunshot wound has been identified by the Hood County Sheriff’s Office as Levi Shaw, and a news release quotes Sheriff Roger Deeds as saying it was “a terrible accident occurred where a father accidentally shot his 9-year-old son.”
After the child suffered a gunshot wound at a residence in Acton, he was transported to a Fort Worth hospital, Hood County Sheriff’s Office Lt. Josh Lane told the Hood County News Wednesday in an Aug. 10 news release.
Lane stated in that initial news release that “The circumstances surrounding this incident are still under investigation by the Hood County Sheriff’s Office and the Texas Rangers. At this time, there is no other information available to be released.”
On Thursday, Lane emailed a second news release, which states that the names of Levi Shaw’s parents are Camie Rose Shaw and Dallas Ray Shaw.
After that, the Hood County News became aware that the news release that included quotes from Sheriff Deeds had been released to a TV station in the Metroplex, late Thursday morning. That news release also states, “This accident is still under the investigation by this agency and the Texas Rangers,” and adds, “this will be presented to the Grand Jury.”
Lane added, “All cases, such as this, are considered criminal investigations until determined otherwise, however the circumstances surrounding this incident are still under investigation by the Hood County Sheriff’s Office and the Texas Rangers.”
In response to an email from the Hood County News seeking clarification about who lived in the residence, Lane wrote, “It was his (Levi Shaw’s) residence and as far as I know everyone lives at the residence.”
The first news release, on Aug. 10, had stated, “Deputies with the Hood County Sheriff’s Office responded to the 100 block of Abbey Park Court after receiving a 911 call for a 9-year-old child that had been shot. Arriving deputies determined that the child had been shot, while in the residence, and was being treated by EMS. The child was eventually transported by (air ambulance) to Cook Children’s Hospital (Fort Worth).”
The email then adds, “… however (the child) was later pronounced deceased.”
The 911 call blotter lists the incident as having been called in at 1:41 p.m. on Tuesday, Aug. 9.
