Pirates looking for win on Senior Night

Posted

Granbury High School (0-1) will play host to Waco University High School (0-1) in the first of three straight home football dates at Johnny Perkins Field, and the Pirates are hungry for a Senior Night win after a close loss last week.

The Pirates got stronger late in the game against Fort Worth Paschal last Friday in their season opener, but ran out of time and fell 38-35. University’s opener was a little more challenging as the Trojans ended up on the wrong end of a 68-7 swamping by A&M Consolidated.

University made some mental mistakes to start the season, and if they are not corrected, Granbury fans can expect to see a big night from the Pirates’ passing game.

The Trojans gave up seven passing touchdowns as Consolidated senior quarterback Brodie Daniel passed for 313 yards and seven touchdowns, completing 14 of 21 passes. Daniel had six touchdowns at halftime.

That sounds ripe for Pirate quarterback Austin Jinkerson, who had equally impressive numbers as he connected on 20 of 24 passing for four scores and 340 yards. Jinkerson also lived up to his billing as a dual-threat player with a 22-yard gallop. The senior had a much longer run called back due to a holding penalty.

Jinkerson hit multiple targets as he connected with Gus Hamlin on two scores of 50 and 70 yards. Jinkerson also found converted defensive back Dereck Lacy for a 52-yard touchdown and started with a 7-yard scoring toss to crash Davis.

The biggest surprise was University attempting only six passes out of their spread offense, which was supposed to help the Trojans break their playoff slump under new head coach Kent Laster.

Both teams will be looking to clean up the mistakes they made in week one. While it may sound trite, this will be a game won by the team with the fewest mistakes.

The key to a Granbury win is better tackling and containing the Trojans’ running game and not turning over the ball in situations that would give University a short field position.

An established coaching staff gives GHS a leg up in this game, and there should be some offensive fireworks on Johnny Perkins Field Friday night.
