Plash nets 27 in Pirates’ 75-59 win

Granbury High School’s boys basketball team is on a four-game winning streak and is 2-0 in District 5-5A play after knocking around Wichita Falls High School 75-59 at the James Wann Sports Center Tuesday.

The Pirates (12-12, 2-0) appear to be hitting their stride at just the right time after coach David Breazeale was worried his team had too many up-and-down nights.

One of the most significant factors in the Pirates' recent surge is having players other than Peyton Plash taking charge of the scoring. But that wasn't exactly the case against WFHS (2-22, 0-2) as the flashy senior point guard netted a game-high 27 points.

Still, Plash had plenty of support, with Corbin King netting 15 points, Kensington Colston adding nine, Isaiah Trejo eight and Dylon Couto seven.

In recent matchups, the latter four in that list have had big nights, and it has caused opposing defenses to adjust to stop Granbury's multi-pronged attack.

That was the case against the Coyotes, and it opened scoring opportunities for Plash, too.

Plash led the way with 11 points in the first half, but King, Sawyer Schenewark, Colston, Trejo, and Couto were also threats as GHS moved out front 36-29 at the half.

While the fans focused on offense, Breazeale was looking to cut down the Coyotes' scoring efforts in the second half, and the Pirates responded.

"We got a little distance from Old High during the third quarter due to getting a few stops and executing a bit better offensively. But they were difficult for us to guard," Breazeale said. "We couldn't contain dribble penetration all night ... very frustrating. We will have to guard better than that Friday."

After giving up 21 points in the second quarter, the Pirates doubled down, giving up just 11 in the third and establishing a comfortable 17-point lead they would maintain the remainder of the way.

While it is still early in the season, the win puts Granbury in first place in District 5-5A, and it leaves the Pirates in control of their destiny because they are the only team without a league loss.

"Our district does seem pretty even right now. But some will emerge, and some will slide as time goes by. Home teams are undefeated so far," Breazeale said.

However, there is little room for mistakes with Fort Worth Brewer, Aledo, Wichita Falls Rider, and Azle all at 1-1, tied for second place while WFHS is 0-2.

The need for playing mistake-free comes at a critical time for the Pirates because four of their next five games will be on the road and includes dates at Azle and Aledo.

As for our offensive spread in scoring — that is how you want it as a coach in district play," Breazeale said. "Having a few threats is easier to guard, even if one of those threats is a great player than having multiple guys who are capable of putting up good point production at any time."
