Students returning to school as COVID-19 cases decline

Posted

More Granbury students are returning to the classroom as the number of COVID-19 cases drops.

More than 600 GISD students have returned to in-person instruction.

Four active cases were reported last week – three staff members and one student.

That’s from 10 active cases three weeks ago and a high of 18 a month ago.

About 700 of the 2,000-plus Granbury High students were learning remotely at the start of school. That number has dropped below 500.

Other campuses are reporting similar results.

“We are so excited to have more of our students returning to campus,” Acton Middle School Principal Jennifer Pennington said. “Tuesday we had approximately 75 students return and have had many students continue to return Wednesday and Thursday. We know virtual learning has been tough for some families, and we welcome students back with open arms.”

Some students prefer daily in-person interaction with their teachers and classmates, a school spokesman said.

“Some do not like or do not perform well with virtual instruction,” said GISD communications director Jeff Meador. “Some have responded to the low number of positive cases in GISD schools.”

About 18% of the students still choose virtual instruction.

“Our teachers and staff are working hard to support these students and families,” Meador said.

Students and parents always may switch to virtual instruction at any time. Election of virtual instruction lasts for the remainder of the grading period.

Jincy Ross, principal of Brawner Elementary School, said, “Students are meeting their teachers, seeing friends and getting back into the groove of in-person instruction.”
