The Voice

Scott Squires turned heads in the first round of The Voice of Granbury with his rendition of “Cattle Call” by Eddie Arnold.

He was turning hearts in the second round when he opened his mouth and Keith Whitley came out.

Whitley died of alcohol overdose almost 30 years ago, but Squires brought him back to the stage when he sang “Don’t Close Your Eyes.”

Before a full house Thursday night, Squires drew the most votes from the audience and won The Voice of Granbury title at the Gran-bury Opera House. Squires works at Classic Chevrolet and lives in DeCordova with his wife Melissa and two children.

The fundraiser was presented by Lake Granbury Kiwanis Club.

It came down to the singer versus the performer in the final round. But the soulful sound of Squires beat out the nutty performance of Matt Mills, county attorney and Kiwanian.

Before singing Andy Gibb’s “I Just Want to Be Your Everything” in the first round, Mills smiled and said, “I hope you’ll enjoy the falsetto sound.” And a piercing sound it was.

In the second round Mills opted for a totally different style with his interpretation of “You Never Even Called Me By My Name,” recorded by David Allen Coe.

Susie Strong, Tony Hedges and Trish Reiner made the second round of cuts. Other competitors were Jerry Allen, Matt Beutner, Micky Shearon, Angela Burkey and Amanda Peterson.

The total raised was not available at press time.
