What should I do?

Cresson’s Community Emergency Response Team (CERT) and the Cresson Fire Department will offer free active threat training to the public on Saturday, Jan. 18.

The training will take place from 9:30 a.m. until noon at the Historic Cresson School, located at 9304 Pittsburgh St. (behind Sonic).

Seating is limited to about 75 people and will be available on a first-come, first-served basis.

Sgt. Jesse Davis of the Hood County Sheriff’s Office (HCSO) will present the nationally recognized Avoid-Deny-Defend curriculum that is part of the Advanced Law Enforcement Rapid Response Training (ALERRT) program at Texas State University.

Davis has been in law enforcement for 33 years and has 10 years of SWAT experience. He is a training coordinator for the HCSO as well as a firearms instructor and proficiency officer.

The Granbury Police Department offers similar safety training for local businesses that request it.

Active shooter and active threat situations have grown increasingly common.

Last Sunday, Hood County resident Jack Wilson took down a shooter who began firing during a worship service at West Freeway Church of Christ in White Settlement.

Wilson is a member of the congregation’s security team. Other team members responded as well when the man began shooting during communion.

Although the shooter was shot and killed within just six seconds, he nevertheless managed to kill two members of the congregation.
