Joe Barnet "JB" Howard Jr., 89, of Lake Fork, Quitman, passed from this life Monday, Jan. 27, 2020, at his home on the lake. Services for JB will be 11:30 a.m. Friday, Feb. 21, at the Dallas-Fort Worth National Cemetary, 2000 Mountain Creek Parkway, in Dallas.

JB was born Sept. 28, 1930, to Joe Barnet and Chloe Koiner Howard in Greenwood, He graduated from Slidell High School in 1948 and was accepted to telephone lineman school. In 1952, he was drafted into the U.S. Army and spent two years in Germany.

He returned to work for SW Bell Telephone, played on the company baseball team and would later retire from Bell Telephone. In 1954, he married Jo Coleman, and they lived in various towns before they settled in Hurst, where they raised four children.

They purchased their first boat and spent many weekends at the lake or at the Howard farm in Greenwood. JB moved to Granbury in 1974 and lived on the lake for many years. He married Jane Sims in Granbury, and later they moved to Lake Fork near Quitman. JB, along with his nephew, built the house on Lake Fork, later adding a boat dock — the perfect place for a man who loved being on the lake.

JB was preceded in death by his wife Jane; his parents; his three siblings and their spouses, Charles and Emily Howard, Wilema and Joe England and Lily Mae and JE Haynes; daughter- in-law Vicky Howard; grandsons Joseph Howard and Layne Cates; and grandaughter Jennifer Howard. He is survived by his four children, Bobbie King, Ronald Howard and Vicki Cates (Dewayne) of Hereford and Forrest Howard (Tammy) of Grand Prairie; five grandchildren, Stephanie Howard Shaw, Melissa Howard, Nathan Cates, Mitchell Cates and Michael Howard; and four great-grandchildren, Matthew Lanier, Maddox Shaw, Mason Shaw and Jaycee Cates.
