Loretta Mae Volle Uhles of Granbury, Texas, passed away on March 31, 2020, due to complications from COPD. She was 94 years old. An inurnment will be held at the Dallas National Cemetery at a later date.
Loretta was born on May 29, 1925, in Springfield, Illinois, the youngest child of Fred and Sofia Mittelsteadt Volle. She was Baptized and Confirmed at Trinity Lutheran Church in Springfield and was guided by her faith in the Lord through-out her entire life. She graduated from Lanphier High School in 1943. She attended Washington University in St. Louis, MO, for three years before leaving school to marry her first husband, Robert L. Howard, on November 28,1946. He had served in the Army as an ambulance driver in Europe during WWII and had recently become a licensed podiatrist. They moved to Joplin, MO and had two sons, Douglas and David. Bob passed away suddenly in 1952 forcing Loretta, a widow with two young children to move back to her parent's home in Springfield.
Loretta's mother Sophia died from ovarian cancer a month later. On May 1,1953 Loretta married Paul F. Uhles, an ordained Lutheran minister. Paul had served in the Navy during WWII and had survived the sinking of his ship, the USS Ommaney Bay. The family initially moved to Hillsboro, TX for several years then in 1956 moved to Hamilton, TX until 1962 when Paul entered the US Navy as a Chaplain. While in Hillsboro, her son Paul was born; and in Hamilton her son Perry was born.
Her life as a Navy wife took her to San Diego, Norfolk, Great Lakes, Memphis, Puerto Rico, and Kingsville. After the Navy, Paul and Loretta moved to Borger, TX, before retiring to their home at Lake Whitney in 1989. In 2009 they moved to Waterview Independent Living Home in Granbury, where she lived until her death.
Loretta was an accomplished singer and organist. Her sense of humor contributed to her entertainment skills as did her cooking ability. She loved to play bridge, dominoes, "42", and most any board or card game. Travel and curiosity were in her blood. She never saw a country road she didn't want to explore and she was forever finding "shortcuts." She was as comfortable driving the free-ways of Southern California as she was on the backroads of central Texas.
Loretta was preceded in death by her parents, her sister Charlotte Kribbs, brother Robert Volle, daughter-in-law Mary Uhles, and both husbands.
She is survived by her four sons: Douglas Uhles of Granbury, TX, David Uhles (Cathi) of Colorado Springs, CO, Paul Uhles (Sherri) of Fort Worth, TX, and Perry Uhles (Kathy) of Highland Village, TX; her 11 grandchildren: Pamela Brownstein (Daniel), Paula Uhles, Patrick Uhles, Christopher Uhles (Melissa), Megan Blanchard (Jim), Stephanie Uhles, Paul Clark Uhles (Bridget), Michael Uhles (Crescenda), Chaney Uhles, Stephen Uhles, and Katy Uhles; and her great-grandchildren: Grace, Kaylee, Sophia, Cecelia, Carson, Cooper, Julia, Wolfe, Selah, Eli, Olivia, and Titus. She is also remembered by her nieces Pauline, Roberta, Charlotte Marie, Helen, Barbara, and Anne, many great-nieces and nephews and a host of friends who will miss her.
