2020 election fatigue: Is it finally over?

Posted

Sam Houston is the publisher of the Hood County News. He is also an actor, author, playwright, performer and entertainment producer/promoter.

Like a lot of you, I am glad the election is over with! I will never understand why the national election process takes more than two years to conclude!

Does anybody really believe it takes that long for someone to decide who to vote for? And the money spent! I have read that in the U.S. Senate race in South Carolina, each one of the candidates spent over 90 million dollars for a job which pays $174,000 a year! Those numbers make me wonder who is donating so much cash and what do they get for it?

In any event the elections are over, and I hope the entire country can try and come together. Whether you are talking about the right wing, or the left wing, try and remember, both wings belong to the same bird.

God Bless America and our democratic system of government. It may not be perfect, but it is better than any other system ever invented!

I have really enjoyed having the stories about our Hood County military veterans in the paper. Today’s story about Mr. Hawbaker is interesting for a lot of reasons, not the least of which is he is 97 and still lives by himself in the outskirts of Hood County! Amazing man all the way around.

There are many great veterans stories to tell and it is a shame there is so little space and time. The stories of all our vets are special and deserved recognition and our thanks!

I know a lot of folks get upset over Facebook and some of the things that get posted there. This past week I had a great social media experience because I decided to look up an old friend of mine I had not seen since we graduated high school. “Snakebite” as we called him, sort of fell off the edge of the earth and none of his classmates knew where he ended up or what had happened to him.

One evening while I was sitting at home, he crossed my mind and I decided to look him up on Facebook. I was surprised to find he lives down at Round Rock. He taught school there and in other places around Texas and is now retired. We managed to get caught up and are making plans to get together and renew our friendship. Without Facebook I would have never known where he was or had the opportunity to reconnect. Facebook is good for something other than irritating your political and social enemies!

I had lunch recently with Dr. Tom Hamilton and Maurice Walton, both members of the Bridge Street History Center. The membership of Bridge Street has all sorts of wonderful ideas to secure and memorialize the history of Hood County. The Hood County News is a 135-year- old paper and its archives truly contain the “history” of our hometown. I am exited to see Bridge Street and the Hood County News working together to make sure our history is maintained and is available to our citizens. Granbury is the two-time winner of the Best Historic Small Town in America, and Bridge Street History Center is just one of the many reasons why!

Thought for the day: If you think nobody cares, try missing a couple of car payments!

Until next time...
