Fall is coming, in all its glory

CRESSON  MAYOR

Cresson Mayor Teena Putteet Conway, a native of Cresson, attended school for two years in the historic Cresson school. She is a Granbury High School graduate, and earned a BBA from Baylor University. After marrying, then raising her family in the Metroplex, she returned to Cresson after 40 years.

Fall is truly just around the corner even though I recently almost melted with temperatures over the 100-degree mark inside my vehicle. My favorite time of the day are the evenings right now when it cools off just enough to sit outside and listen to the frogs come out and jump into the pool.

There are so many fun things to do this time of year.  I love going to the Historic Cresson School every year and participating in all the fun times at the Fall Festival. This year it will be held on Saturday, Oct. 30 from 9 a.m. to 2 p.m. (or whenever the live auction ends). You can have some old-fashioned fun like the cake walk that takes place in an old school room where there are still the same desks that we used back in the day. It’s fun to just see inside the mock classroom, much less win a cake or cookies for playing the game!

There will also be a live auction with our favorite auctioneer, Larry Richeson, and a silent auction as well! We have lots of fun with this event and the proceeds all go to a good cause, which is to raise funds for the maintenance and upkeep of the Historic Cresson School. Come with a big appetite because they will be serving their traditional barbecue lunch for a great price.

And, by the way, if you have not stopped by the school and visited the museum, it is a must! Local Cresson residents Norm and Johnnie Tindell have done so much work to keep the building in good shape as well as creating the museum. There is a lot to read about and see in the former grades 1-3 classroom. The local ranchers’ families have contributed items to make the visit very interesting. The museum is open on Wednesdays and Fridays from 11-3 p.m.

Just to show how old I am, there was once an event at the Cresson School during a fall event where my dad, Billy Joe Putteet, my uncle Buster Putteet, Kenneth Teich (still living in Cresson), and Fred Bryant, all Cresson citizens, dressed up like the Beatles! With my uncle Buster as the lead singer, he led the band and performed a little concert on the stage inside the school. It was a fond memory that I still look back on and get a chuckle from.

Just to add to the mischief, my mom, Rose Putteet, dressed up like Phyllis Diller, the comedian, and did her own stand-up show along with a totally white wig on and holding a long, fancy white cigarette holder. I can still hear her ‘cackling’ like the famed comedian. The fall evening included chili pies, bobbing for apples, and lots of old-fashioned fun!

I was sharing with my high school friend, Robbie Gaffin Cook, the other day that I would love to have a square dance inside the Historic Cresson School. She and I agreed it would be a blast even though neither of us know how to square dance! Never say never because you never know what is coming to Cresson next!
