PECAN PLANTATION BITS

A Mississippi native who has been a Texas transplant for 26 years, Diane Long is a wife, mother and English teacher who has written Pecan Plantation Bits for 13 years cumulatively. She spends her time gathering neighborhood news and teaching students how to avoid passive voice.

Saturday, May 14 beginning at 9 a.m. will find adult shooters taking aim with their air guns for a field target match. Participants should bring their own guns.

The event is sponsored by Pecan’s Archery/Air Gun Association that meets the first Tuesday evening of each month at 7 p.m. at the range located on Ravenswood Road. All interested participants are invited to join.

RV CLUB

The RV Club reminds folks of its mini rally on the calendar for Sunday, May 15 through Wednesday, May 18 at the Shady Campground here in Pecan.

For complete information on the RV Club and its upcoming rally, contact David Koon at dk1341@swbellnet.

GENEALOGY MEETING

The Genealogy Group will be “on the go” this month as its meeting on Tuesday, May 17 at 10 a.m. will include visiting several Hood County museums.

The day will begin at the Railroad Depot Museum and then move to the Jail Museum before viewing the Yeats/Duke Cabin. All interested folks are welcome to this final gathering before a summer hiatus.

For more information on the outing, or the Genealogy Group and its activities in general, contact Ronda Bauman at rondabauman@sbcglobal.net.

WOMAN’S CLUB

The final official gathering of the Pecan Plantation Woman’s Club comes Thursday, May 19 with social time beginning at 9:30 a.m. and President Annelle Teal calling the meeting to order at 10. This gathering will be the final collective meeting of the PPWC for the 2021-2022 year. “Music, Music, Music” with Pecan’s own talented Carolyn Brittin-Troland and featuring melodies from PPWC members is the program for the day, and the Table Top Charity for May is Forward Training Center of Hood County. Monetary donations from ladies will provide school supplies and fill classroom needs. PPWC membership renewals for the 2022-2023 year are now available, and ladies may visit www.myppwc.com to renew or purchase a new membership.

SUMMER PARTY

The advent of May signals summer coming upon us, and Pecan Plantation will open the season with a Memorial Day street dance on Sunday, May 29. The hours of 5:30 to 10 p.m. will bring live music, food, games and neighborhood fellowship.

MANY THANKS

The folks at Pecan Stables had the privilege this spring of honoring its caretaker and expressing gratitude to him for 39 years of service to the boarders and their owners. Thank you, Pastor Flores, for the care you have given to so many for these past decades.

Also recognized on the day were Daniel Van Patten and the entire team that cares for horses, makes repairs and maintains the stable and its facilities.

Many thanks to everyone who made the day happen and lauded Pastor for his tenure.

DINING UPDATE

“Pizza to go” is on Pecan’s menu from 4 p.m. to 8 p.m. each Thursday through Saturday. Orders may be placed and picked up at the clubhouse reception desk.

The Brazos Room is now open for “Brunch in the Brazos” from 11 a.m. to 2 p.m. as well as evening dining. Reservations are required and may be made by calling the front desk. In addition, the 19th Hole hours on Sunday are now 2 p.m. to 10 p.m.

ART NEWS

Pecan Plantation Art Guild member Kathy Yoders has her pet portraits featured for May’s “Art on the Wall” gallery at the Pecan clubhouse. Members will enjoy seeing Kathy’s exceptional skill in these heartwarming pieces.

Congratulations to Margo Gary for being chosen artist of the month, and members enjoyed her work, along with that of Barbara Brown, Linda Parks and Cheryl Moore, displayed in the entry hall to the Brazos Dining Room of the clubhouse.

More work from guild members adorns hallways of the PAC where folks may admire the talent present in our art community.

GREEN SUCCESS

The Green Thumb Garden Club recently enjoyed a very successful plant and yard art fundraiser. Linda Kunzman says the group was “blown away” with the turnout, and most plants were sold out before noon on event day. Thank you to everyone who supported this hardworking group that keeps the common areas of Pecan so scenic.

GREAT CARE

May 15-21 is National Emergency Medical Service Week, and how grateful we are for the EMS volunteers in our neighborhood. Thank you to the men and women who work diligently to keep Pecaners safe and well.
