Finally, fall is in the air

CRESSON MAYOR

Cresson Mayor Teena Putteet Conway, a native of Cresson, attended school for two years in the historic Cresson school. She is a Granbury High School graduate, and earned a BBA from Baylor University. After marrying, then raising her family in the Metroplex, she returned to Cresson after 40 years.

We thought we would never see temperatures under a scorching 100 degrees again, but amazingly, here we are in September with some lovely days again.

Longtime local resident Kenneth Teich tracks rainfall at his Kinder Ranch. He shared that up to writing of this article mid-month, he had gotten approximately 6 and a quarter inch of rainfall. This, as you all know, was so needed. Our pond at Putteet Hill is full again. There were still fish there. When it was at its lowest level, our grandson fished it successfully. We always practice catch and release to ensure others get to enjoy the fishing as well.

At the “Lest We Forget” 9/11 Patriot Day event on Sept. 11, I had the honor to be a part of the program. It was very touching and in the loveliest setting at Memorial Lane. Hats off to Faye Landrum and Julia Pannell for putting this program together alongside their committee members. If you have never attended, please plan to attend next year. Being there and hearing the speakers really helps one reset and focus on what is important in our complicated world.

My biggest surprise was getting to see a little girl, Zoey, that I had in the classroom at Baccus Elementary when I substitute taught one year. Zoey was in kindergarten at the time and now she’s in fifth grade. She was a breath of fresh air as each time I walked into the school, she would greet me with a big hug and a warm smile. Last night as we boarded the trolley to go back to our cars, she came running up to me and my husband and said, “come on, we’re loading up and I want you to ride with me!” Zoey and her classmates are our future. Kindness radiates through her smile. And Zoey is not afraid to suggest to an adult a ride together that might allow us to spend a little more time together.

Another event that is coming up is the 50 Fellas Foodfest event which is held each year. The foundation was created to support the educational programs for both the students and staff of Granbury ISD sponsor grants for the classrooms. Mark your calendar for Oct. 15 starting at 6 p.m. to 8:30 p.m. at the Granbury Reunion Grounds-Courts Cleveland Show Barn. If you like eating, and know it’s for a good cause, please come out and enjoy a fun evening.

Fall also brings to us the Cresson Fall Festival held at the Historic Cresson School. This year, the date is Saturday, Oct. 29. Get there early to bid on the best items in the silent auction and please do plan to eat lunch with us as well. All monies raised go toward the upkeep and continual restoration of the school. If you have not toured the Museum (in the classroom that I attended first and second grades), this is a must-see. There is lots of history in that little classroom. Hats off to Norm and Johnnie Tindall and his committee for the ongoing maintenance.

Until next time, make sure to enjoy our cooler days of fall. Lots of fun things to be a part in Hood County!
