Generous neighbors stock food bank to serve area residents

PECAN PLANTATION BITS

A Mississippi native who has been a Texas transplant for 28 years, Diane Long is a wife, mother, and English teacher who has written Pecan Plantation Bits for 15 years cumulatively. She spends her time both gathering neighborhood news and teaching students how to avoid passive voice.

The residents of Pecan Plantation have displayed generosity on numerous occasions, and Dennis and Katherine Prevost send news of a recent event which allowed our community to aid folks in our surrounding area yet again.

The Brazos River Food Bank requested assistance in holding a “driveway food drive” as their facility’s shelves were bare, and the two-day collection happened two weeks ago in Pecan Plantation. The endeavor brought a collection of over four tons of food, every bit of which was transported to the Brazos River Food Bank for distribution to folks in our area. In addition to food, Pecan residents also donated bedding and toiletries to families affected by the recent Glen Rose fires and collected more than $2,000 in cash for purchasing other items helpful to local residents.

Thank you to the Prevosts for hosting their fourth driveway food drive in the past 22 months and thank you to the truly generous Pecan residents for responding so faithfully.

AUXILIARY FUNDRAISER

Pecan’s Fall Bazaar is happening today, Saturday, Oct. 1 from 9 a.m. to 3 p.m. at the PAC and on its surrounding grounds. Pecan’s gates are open for the public to attend the bazaar, and live music inside and outside the PAC will make the environment festive. The event is hosted by the Volunteer Fire Department/Emergency Medical Auxiliary, and every penny raised during the day will benefit our community’s emergency volunteers.

The handiwork of artists, artisans, crafters, and woodworkers will be on full display and for sale, along with a variety of specialty foods and services offered by more than sixty-five vendors.

The Auxiliary is offering several lovely raffle prizes and baskets at this family friendly event where children may participate in activities conducted by Pecan Plantation volunteer firefighters.

Furthermore, the Auxiliary will be selling food at lunch time, and Cowtown Gold & Silver will be on site to buy scrap gold, silver, and other precious metals and will award the VFD/EMS ten percent of their earnings.
