Pecan Woman’s Club activities ushering in holiday season

Posted

PECAN PLANTATION BITS

A Mississippi native who has been a Texas transplant for 27 years, Diane Long is a wife, mother and English teacher who has written Pecan Plantation Bits for 14 years cumulatively. She spends her time gathering neighborhood news and teaching students how to avoid passive voice.

The Pecan Plantation Woman’s Club has a busy season on the calendar, beginning with its next general meeting on Thursday, Nov. 18. Social time begins at the Pecan clubhouse at 9:30 a.m., and President Annelle Teal will call the meeting to order at 10.

“Amazing Autumn” will be the theme for the day with a fashion show “for the Pecan woman” on the program.

In addition, the PPWC has another big date coming on Saturday, Nov. 20 when its annual Thanksgiving Bake Sale will begin at 10 a.m. at the PAC.

Homemade casseroles and all manner of baked goods will be available for purchase. Items will go quickly, so shoppers will want to come early.

Finally, the ladies’ Christmas Tour of Homes will happen Thursday, Dec. 9. This very popular event has grown into an all-day gala, and three tour packages are available for purchase. The collection of items for Santa’s workshop and bakery held on tour day have already begun, and ladies may bring items to the Nov. 18 meeting.

The PPWC ladies hold friendship, fellowship, philanthropy, and a love for the arts as their tenets and welcome all female Pecan members to the club’s ranks. Funds raised from the bake sale and tour of homes events benefit the ladies’ chosen recipients, both in and outside of our community’s gates.

VOTING TIME

Today, Saturday, Nov. 13, is election day to fill a spot on the Pecan Plantation Volunteer Fire Department/Emergency Medical Service board of directors. Ballots should be returned to the Charlie Lee EMS Building on Monticello Drive before 10 a.m.

GENEALOGY GROUP

On Tuesday, Nov. 16, the Pecan Plantation Genealogy Club will meet at the Granbury Church of Christ at 10 a.m. to discuss how DNA impacts genealogy work. Attendees will view a video and then have a question-and-answer session among group members experienced in the field. For more information send an email to cjb65us@yahoo.com.

AUTUMN TO WINTER

“Turning the Season,” autumn to winter, a tradition at dusk, will occur Friday, Nov. 19 at 5 p.m.

Pecaners are invited to meet at the golf pro shop to watch and listen as bag piper Robert Silvestri strolls across No. 9 fairway to No. 1 tee box with Highland sounds to welcome the winter season.

BLUES NIGHT

Ray Reed and Gator will entertain in the clubhouse ballroom Saturday, Nov. 20 from 7 to 11 p.m. for a night of rhythm and blues. Food will be available for purchase, and reservations are required: 817-573-2641.

COLLECTION CENTER

Pecan’s collection center has changed its dates for receiving items from the last Saturday of each month to the following dates: Saturday, Nov. 20 and Saturday, Dec. 18. Operating hours remain 8 a.m. to noon on both dates.

ART UPDATE

The Pecan Plantation Art Guild (PPAG) announces “Art on the Wall” at the clubhouse featuring artist Gloria Lee Hood for the month of November.

Gloria said that her creative spirit and ability to “think out of the box,” coupled with her passion to pursue artistic interests, allow her to produce art and create an art avenue for fellow painters. Gloria believes in art marketing, which produces art awareness, and she is the founder and publisher of The Eyes of Texas Fine Art Gallery LLC publication and online virtual gallery. Her art has been accepted and awarded in juried art shows is now being collected internationally.

Gloria loves texture, adding glass and mirror in most of her creations for “extra bling.” Her inspiration for her commissioned art is to create a personal conversation piece, bringing warmth and smiles to others.

Our deepest sympathy goes to the family of Allen Engerer, who passed away Oct. 28, and also to the family of Freddy Shipley, who passed away Oct. 29.
