The magic of the holidays makes everything better, including travel.

But what is it about the holidays that affects us? Is it the weather? Is it the extra vacation time off work and school that allows us time with our family? Is it the decorations, the change in music, the seasonal cuisine, the annual parties, the special events, the traditions, or the Hallmark movies? I suspect it’s a pinch of this, and a bit of that mixed all together.

October is the beginning of the holiday travel season. It marks a change in the weather and a different kind of travel is upon us. Gone are the days of summer filled with beaches and watersports. This is the time of fall foliage, hot cocoa, and Halloween. Fall foliage is a popular travel experience and travelers frequently go to the northeastern United States, Canada, and Europe to experience nature’s beauty. Halloween lovers enjoy Universal Orlando’s Halloween Horror Nights for a scary good time.

November brings us Thanksgiving vacation with the family. Many ski resorts open the last week of November. Surprisingly, Caribbean cruises are very popular for Thanksgiving. Escape the cold weather for a warmer getaway and let the cruise line do all the cooking and cleaning for your family’s feast! Thanksgiving is a great time to plan next year’s spring and summer family vacations. While the family is all together you can plan your next big family adventure. Then you can book it while there are holiday sales, and surprise the kids on Christmas morning with the announcement!

December is the most magical month for many travelers. Hannukah and Christmas celebrations and decorations are enchanting. European River Cruises, sailing from village to village to explore the world’s most amazing Christmas Markets, are a popular itinerary on the Rhine River.

Taste your way through German and European Christmas favorites of Glühwein (hot spiced wine), Marzipan, and Gebranntemandeln (sugared almonds), to name a few. Be sure to leave space in your luggage for all the gifts you buy!

In the U.S., Walt Disney World Florida is a family travel favorite. Disney transforms its theme parks and hotels into a winter holiday wonderland. Of course, the famous Disney Christmas Day Parade is a must-do experience. My favorite Disney Christmas tradition is the Gingerbread House competition the chefs have at the resorts. I love visiting the resorts and viewing these gigantic Gingerbread house creations. And now Disney Cruise Line even has a Gingerbread house competition.

Happy New Year! Domestic travel is at its peak with travel to Times Square in New York, Las Vegas, Disney and Universal Theme Parks, as travelers seek the ultimate fireworks display and biggest parties to celebrate the coming of the new year at midnight.

Holiday travel is popular. I highly recommend booking your holiday travel six months to a year in advance. The popular destinations at the busiest travel times will sell out early!
