PECAN PLANTATION BITS

A Mississippi native who has been a Texas transplant for 27 years, Diane Long is a wife, mother, and English teacher who has written Pecan Plantation Bits for 14 years cumulatively. She spends her time both gathering neighborhood news and teaching students how to avoid passive voice.

The final official gathering of the Pecan Plantation Woman’s Club comes Thursday, May 19 with social time beginning at 9:30 a.m. and President Annelle Teal calling the meeting to order at 10.

This gathering will be the final collective meeting of the PPWC for the 2021-2022 year. “Music, Music, Music” with Pecan’s own talented Carolyn Brittin-Troland and featuring melodies from PPWC members is the program for the day, and the table top charity for May is Forward Training Center of Hood County. Monetary donations from ladies will provide school supplies and fill classroom needs.

PPWC membership renewals for the 2022-2023 year are now available, and ladies may visit www.myppwc.com to renew or purchase a new membership. Reservations are due by Friday, May 13; secure a spot by sending email to ppwcres@gmail.com.

The PPWC is a generous group, and at its April spring fashion show meeting, the ladies also honored their chosen Hood County charities. Receiving funds from PPWC work this year are Friends for Animals, Hood County Children’s Christmas Charities, CASA, Ada Carey Women Shelter and Mission Granbury. And to continue its work in our community, ladies will be holding a drive-through food pantry on Saturday, May 21 from 10 a.m. to 3 p.m. at the PAC. All collected items will benefit the Rancho Brazos Community Center.

The PPWC’s founding tenets include friendship, fellowship, philanthropy and an appreciation of the arts. All resident Pecan ladies are invited to join.

While the PPWC takes a summer sabbatical, ladies are invited to enjoy Chit Chat luncheons. More information on these fun and informal gatherings coming soon.

ART GUILD

The Pecan Plantation Art Guild will meet again on Tuesday, May 10 at 10:30 a.m. at the PAC. Guest demonstrator will be watercolor artist Randy Meador. Pecan residents ages 18 and over are welcome to join.

In addition, the guild is pleased to present its 2022 Spring Show beginning Friday, May 27 and running through Friday, June 10. Artwork, including two- and three-dimensional pieces as well as photography, will be displayed at Farina’s Winery and Cafe just off the Granbury square. The guild’s Artist of the Year will be the recipient of the Best of Show award at the event. A reception where attendees may meet the artists will happen on Friday, May 27 at 7 p.m. Everyone is welcome.

BREAKFAST CLUB

Pecan’s Breakfast Club welcomed a large crowd last week when Errol Flannery, a direct descendent of David Crockett, addressed attendees. Folks heard an entertaining and educational rendition of Crockett’s life and also received information about the Stroll through Texas History happening May 21 in Acton.

The next meeting of Breakfast Club comes Wednesday, May 11, and reservations are due by noon on Tuesday, May 10. Call 817-573-2641 to reserve a spot.

At the gathering, Pecan resident Peggy Freeman and a group of fifth graders representing the Elizabeth Crockett Chapter of the Daughters of the American Revolution will “quiz” a pair of Pecan residents to determine their civic knowledge in preparation for Constitution Camp coming to Granbury in June.

RV CLUB

The RV Club reminds folks of its mini-rally on the calendar for Sunday, May 15 through Wednesday, May 18 at the Shady Campground here in Pecan.

For complete information on the RV Club and its upcoming rally, contact David Koon at dk1341@swbellnet.

GENEALOGY MEETING

The Genealogy Group will be “on the go” this month as its meeting on Tuesday, May 17 at 10 a.m. will include visiting several Hood County museums.

The day will begin at the Railroad Depot Museum and then move to the Jail Museum before viewing the Yeats/Duke Cabin. All interested folks are welcome to this final gathering before a summer hiatus.

For more information on the outing, or the Genealogy Group and its activities in general, contact Ronda Bauman at rondabauman@sbcglobal.net.

GOLF FUNDRAISER

The 2022 Pecan Plantation Volunteer Fire Department/Emergency Medical Service Auxiliary Golf Tournament is on the calendar for Saturday, June 25, and about 70 golfers are already registered to play.

Committee Chair Jennifer Lancaster is also busy signing up sponsors, and several levels of patronage exist. Folks seeking to join the sponsor list may send email to ppvfdemsgolf@gmail.com. In addition, the raffle prize list is generous and growing, and ticket sales will begin soon.

The auxiliary raises funds year-round for our emergency services, and every penny raised supports our volunteers.

WELCOME SUMMER

The advent of May signals summer coming upon us, and Pecan Plantation will open the season with a Memorial Day street dance on Sunday, May 29. Watch for more details coming soon.
