False Start

Posted

The Granbury Pirates were all set to play a day earlier than usual Thursday night at Crowley.

As it turns out, the Pirates had a Friday game anyway.

It just took place at noon.

Storms that swept through the north central Texas area brought lightning, hail and heavy winds to Crowley’s Eagle Stadium Thursday. Gran-bury and Crowley were set to kickoff at 7 p.m., but the first lightning delay began at 6:45 p.m., and the game never started.

Coaches and players huddled in locker rooms and tried to wait out the lightning, but a severe weather warning came just before 9 p.m. and the game was postponed until Friday at noon at Crowley. The intense hail and rain forced Granbury buses to stay put in a gas station parking lot near the stadium for a few minutes before it was safe to drive home.

UIL rules mandate that any postponed games must be made up at the earliest available date, and both schools had previously scheduled early release days for their students on Friday.

The unusual start time scheduled for the makeup date was due to issues with referee scheduling, according to Granbury ISD.
